RN Neurology

Job Summary:

The SMH Level 2 Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neurology unit provides specialized nursing care to patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. The RN utilizes critical thinking skills and telemetry monitoring in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team environment. This role requires expertise in neurological patient care, collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, and adherence to high standards in a Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level 4 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to patients with acute and complex neurological conditions.
• Perform continuous telemetry monitoring and utilize video EEG technology for seizure evaluation and treatment.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, therapists, and specialty staff to develop and implement patient care plans.
• Conduct patient assessments and monitor neurological status using NIHSS certification standards.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Document patient care accurately and timely in electronic medical records.
• Respond to emergencies and provide critical interventions as needed.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State only.
• Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience.
• Telemetry experience required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
• Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills specific to neurological care.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in a neurological or stroke unit.
• Familiarity with electronic health record systems, preferably EPIC.
• Additional certifications related to neurology or critical care nursing.

Special Considerations:

• Must be willing to work rotating day, evening, and night shifts.
• Availability to work weekends, holidays, on-call, and callback as needed.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
• Compliance with infection control and hospital safety protocols.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts including day, evening, and night shifts.
• Schedule includes weekends, holidays, and on-call/ callback duties as per unit needs.
• Up to 48 hours per week with regular time pay for all hours worked.
