Book Content and Research Project Assistant

Position Overview

We are looking for an independent contractor to support a 540-page book project focused on invention and the evolution of ideas through the Anthropocene. This is not primarily an art project. It is a research and publishing project that requires rigorous academic thinking and precision in how visual content and text work together. The ideal candidate has a background in research, academic publishing, or editorial work with image-heavy publications.

Position Type and Details

• Engagement Type: Independent Contractor (Work-for-Hire)
• Location: On-site/West LA
• Compensation: $30-35/hour
• Duration: 6-12 months
• Confidentiality Requirement: NDA required

Core Responsibilities

• Conduct deep research and fact-checking across academic, scientific, and historical sources.
• Organize and edit manuscript content, including coordination of image placement and visual sequencing.
• Work in Adobe InDesign to support layout, image integration, and document preparation.
• Collaborate directly with the project lead to hit milestones and maintain quality standards.
• Identify and evaluate potential agents and publishers; support outreach as needed.
• Serve as liaison between the project lead and publishing professionals.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree preferred. Bachelor's minimum. Fields: Publishing, History, Art History, Science Writing, Journalism, English, or related.
• Demonstrated experience in book publishing, specifically with image-heavy or illustrated publications.
• Strong academic research skills. Ability to work with primary sources, archives, and cross-disciplinary material.
• Proficiency in Adobe InDesign. Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience.
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight on a long-term project.
• High attention to detail and strong written communication.
