Essential Job Functions Provide excellent patient care by performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating diseases, and providing preventive care according to patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment. Utilize a problem-based approach with a complete problem list for each patient, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments based on diagnostic results. Document all patient observations, exams, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record. Perform routine and complex surgical procedures including spays/neuters, abdominal exploratory, and mass removals. Perform routine and complex dental procedures including full dental examinations, evaluation of radiographs, and extractions or oral surgical procedures. Develop treatment plans for day hospitalization and transition patients to overnight care as needed; communicate effectively with referral hospitals for continuity of care. Other Duties and Responsibilities Participate in rounds as incoming or exiting doctor at beginning and end of shifts. Disseminate knowledge to improve the level of care and communication at hospital partners for patients and clients. Performs additional duties as assigned. Nature of Supervision In all activities related to the care of individual patients, the Veterinarian takes direction from the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director, upholding Petco Veterinary SOPs. Feedback related to patient care may be provided via electronic medical record review to elevate care. All hospital veterinarians should work together in a collegial and professional manner. Planning and Problem Solving Problem solving is essential to veterinary medicine; candidates should possess strong problem-solving skills for expeditious diagnosis of patient problems. Education/Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school. Active licensure as a veterinarian in the state of practice or ability to obtain by start date. Current DEA license. Current Controlled Substance License, if applicable. USDA Category I (minimum) Accreditation or completion within two months of hire date. Ability to perform anesthesia and routine surgeries including canine and feline spays, neuters, mass removals, and dentals. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate, professional demeanor under emotional and stressful situations. Telephone and computer skills. Team player willing to learn new techniques and adapt to change. Work Environment The majority of duties are conducted in the Vetco Total Care veterinary hospital. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting up to 30 pounds, and standing for long periods; significant client and pet interaction is expected. Salary Range Salary ranges are disclosed in accordance with state regulations and may vary by location. Actual pay rates depend on position, experience, and applicable minimum wage laws.
