Firefighter/Medic (Firefighter/Paramedic)

Overview Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) is a Class 1, all‑hazards fire and rescue department that provides basic and advanced life support emergency medical services (EMS), fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, and fire prevention and investigation throughout Fairfax County. Responsibilities Respond to emergency calls for fire suppression, rescue, and EMS services. Operate and maintain engines, trucks, rescue squads, tankers, and emergency medical transport units. Carry out fire suppression operations including hose deployment, nozzle operation, and ventilation. Perform technical rescue duties such as extrication, water rescue, and confined‑space entry. Provide basic and advanced life support care, including patient assessment, airway management, medication administration, and advanced emergency procedures. Coordinate with supervising physicians, hospitals, and the department’s Incident Command System. Participate in training, drills, fitness programs, and community outreach activities. Maintain accurate incident, patient, and equipment records using electronic systems. Assist in fire prevention inspections and educational programs for the public. Serve as a crew leader on basic or advanced life support units as assigned. Qualifications High school graduation or GED. Valid driver’s license. Certified Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT‑P and/or National Registry Paramedic. Completion of Fire and Rescue recruit training, Hazardous Materials Operations certification, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, CPR BLS certification, and Advanced Life Support certification. Successful completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 700. Special Requirements Must pass a criminal background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical ability test. Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application. Must be tobacco‑free and nicotine‑free, with a signed conditions of employment agreement. Must maintain a Class “A” medical rating; Class “B” or “C” ratings may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis; Class “D” ratings are not acceptable. Physical Requirements Reach above shoulder height. Work in confined spaces, crawl, climb ladders, and maneuver with body, arms, and equipment. Perform tasks that may require pushing, pulling, or lifting, with or without reasonable accommodation.
