This position performs firefighting and fire operations work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; educates the public in fire, life safety, and prevention measures; provides emergency medical treatment and care to the sick and injured per his/her licensure and certification level, all federal, state, local, and department policies, procedures, standards, and protocols, medical direction, and scope of practice; maintains stations, equipment, and apparatus; responds to and handles an array of emergency and non-emergency calls involving various types of alarms, fires, motor vehicle, and pedestrian accidents, electrical equipment, weather incidents, service calls, etc.; and manages hazardous material type incidents such as odors from unknown sources, propane or natural gas leaks, gasoline and diesel spills, etc. Requirements Duties and Responsibilities The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary. Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls such as medical emergencies, traumatic emergencies and motor vehicle accidents. Extinguishes and controls fires and protects property. Drives and places vehicles and apparatus, places equipment, lays and connects hoses, operates high-capacity pumps, nozzles and directs water streams; utilizes tools and appliances; raises and climbs ladders; uses safety belts, lines and hooks. Participates in training drills; attends school and departmental classes on firefighting, hydraulics, first aid, emergency medical, fire equipment, apparatus, construction, and operation. Services and operates all department equipment and apparatus; performs necessary maintenance, testing and care of fire hoses, trucks, ladders, tools, auxiliary equipment and apparatus. Provides operating and procedural information to the public, individuals, and groups; performs incident activity data entry in computers; responds to hazardous materials incidents; and provides necessary support activities. Provides automatic and mutual aid to other fire and EMS agencies as dispatched and in accordance with departmental policy and aid agreements. Attends required training programs; reads necessary manuals, books, etc.; practices skills and techniques; completes required proficiency tests; and participates in regular classes on firefighting, emergency medical techniques, rescue, equipment maintenance and related subjects. Responds as part of team when incident occurs and operates assigned equipment at fire scenes, involving laying and connecting hoses; holding nozzles, and detecting and adjusting fire streams; raising and climbing ladders; using chemical extinguishers, hose lines, and other equipment. Provides emergency medical assistance, treatment, and care at incidents per his/her licensure and certification level, all federal, state, local, and department policies, procedures, standards, protocols, medical direction, and scope of practice. Drives emergency transport vehicle for Henry County Fire Rescue in the event of a critical EMS call. Assists Henry County Fire Rescue crew with patient care and treatment in the transport unit to his/her licensure level, certifications, protocols, medical direction, and scope of practice, etc. Rides in when necessary to assist and continue an appropriate level of care during transport. Ensures that fire stations, facilities, vehicles, apparatuses, equipment, and grounds are maintained in a clean and orderly condition. Performs extrication, forcible entry, etc. and creates an opening for gaining access to patients in peculiar situations and positions for rescue, treatment, or recovery operations. Administers or assists in life support diagnosis, care, treatment, and efforts per licensure level, certifications, all federal, state, local, and department policies, procedures, standards, protocols, medical direction, etc. including bleeding control, automatic and manual external defibrillation, intravenous therapy, oxygen therapy, drug and fluid administration, airway control, breathing devices, EKG interpretation, C-PAP, CPR, etc. Attends job specific training sessions when required. Ensures all equipment, stations, and apparatuses are well maintained and up to date. Performs or assists with inspections, fire hydrant maintenance details, fire safety education plans and details, and pre-fire plans. Performs pre-fire planning of assigned establishments. Provides miscellaneous tasks, such as flag details, moving equipment from one location to another, and other small tasks when necessary or required. Operates city vehicles, apparatuses, and equipment in performance of duties. Follows chain of command and incident command system in performance of duties Responds to active shooter calls, and may be assigned to a rescue task force; adheres to orders, action, and guidance for such duties. Performs or assists in an array of haz-mat and technical rescue operations. Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of City Fire Codes and related ordinances. Knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, techniques, and methods. Knowledge of firefighting equipment, including personal protective equipment. Knowledge of hazard identification, notification, and correction, including escape route planning. Knowledge of operation and principles of organization structure and incident command. Knowledge of behavior and mechanics of various types of fire. Knowledge of principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression. Knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the City. Knowledge of emergency medical care methods, techniques, equipment, applications, and medical terminology. Skill in operating light, medium, and heavy emergency equipment. Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and apparatus to fight fires, rescue, or provide emergency medical care. Skill in operating a computer. Skill in effective and efficient oral and written communication. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to perform duties in a safe and effective manner under stressful situations and conditions. Ability to use weed eater, saws, and tools in performance of duties and in maintenance of fire station, hydrants, and other assigned areas as needed. Ability to successfully complete a physical agility test/course within the approved time limit. Ability to perform fire prevention building inspections, pre-fire plans, and building familiarization activities. Ability to perform medium- to-heavy manual labor. Ability to complete and pass medical exam as described by McDonough Fire Department, Georgia Firefighter Standards & Training Council, and NFPA 1582. Ability to acquire and maintain required licenses and certifications. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public. Ability to perform all required duties as a certified Firefighter and certified EMT. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent;; possession of a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License (Class B, E, or F) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record; pass employment physical, drug, and alcohol screening; acceptable criminal history; NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 or ability to obtain within one (1) year; must have completed and maintained a Basic Firefighter Certification course that is set forth by the Georgia Firefighters Standard and Training Council and National Professional Qualifications for Firefighters; NPQ Firefighter 1 and Georgia Firefighter certification; must have completed and maintained an Emergency Medical Technician course as set forth by the National Registry of EMTs, State of Georgia Department of Human Resources and Department of Public Health / EMS & Trauma; Georgia Licensed / Certified EMT, EMTI, AEMT, or EMTP, certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); ability to successfully complete a physical agility assessment test/course within the approved time limit; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ADA Compliance Physical Ability Must be able to carry, drag, or restrain individuals or equipment in excess of 100 pounds. The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, crawling, and stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Sensory Requirements Must be able to distinguish different colors, depth perceptions, and field visions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some tasks require perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make discrimination in sound. Some tasks require having close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of machines; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Environmental Factors Essential functions are regularly performed in various indoor and outdoor settings, including living quarters and office areas. Varying work schedules are required. Hazardous tasks performed under emergency conditions may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps such as limited visibility, exposure to hazardous or toxic chemicals or gases, extremes in temperature, cramped surroundings and contact with death, emotional stress, trauma, contagious disease and terminal illnesses. Firefighters are also exposed to extreme heat, contaminated environments, emotionally upset people, noise, physical hazards from traffic, fire and falling objects and atmospheric conditions such as smoke, fumes, odors and gases. The employee may be required to wear a variety of safety equipment as required by NFPA, department protocol, and OSHA.
