About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Acute Med Surg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois license required or confirmation that application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS Must-Have: - Experience in post-operative care of patients - Critical thinking skills - Ability to ask for help when needed - Good bedside manner - Team player Description: The unit has 63 beds, including 49 private rooms and 9 observation beds. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 4-5:1 during the day and 5-6:1 at night. Ratios may increase to 1:6 on days and 1:7 on nights if absolutely necessary. Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical, and wound care. Responsibilities include dressing changes, IV therapy, pain management, managing drains, NG tubes, and TPN. RNs are not required to titrate drips, with heparin being the only common medication handled this way. Charge nurses are assigned on each shift and do not take a patient assignment. A house supervisor is available 24/7. Patient care technicians assist with vitals, ADLs, and ambulation, with ratios varying between 7-10 patients on days and 10-15 patients at night. Respiratory therapy manages nebulizer treatments, while RNs manage inhalers and apply CPAP. Telemetry patients are monitored with central station assistance, and bedside RNs are not required to read strips. Shifts are scheduled from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM for days and 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM for nights. Weekend shifts are required every other week, rotating Saturday and Sunday. Holidays will rotate every other holiday. Travelers will float to units with the same level of experience if needed. Scrub colors are not specified, allowing for flexibility. Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and an additional shift for system training.
