Job Description
Registered Nurse - Surgery/OR

Position Summary: The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process of assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves directing and coordinating nursing care based on nursing practice standards, with collaboration among other healthcare professionals to provide quality, cost-effective, and efficient care to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The nurse serves as a resource person during critical situations and applies age-specific considerations and cultural diversity while rendering patient care. This position encompasses the care of patients from birth to elderly during pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.

Position Qualifications:

• Minimum Education: Completion of a nursing program from an NLN approved institution; Associate Degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred.
• Minimum Experience: 1-2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience.
• License, Certification, Registration: Must be licensed in good standing as a Registered Professional Nurse. Current BLS & ACLS certifications required; PALS preferred. National Certification in Surgery/PACU is also preferred.

Equipment/Tools:

• Office equipment (computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine)
• Medical equipment (cardiac monitors, Autoclave)

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to practice nursing in accordance with Alaska's statutes regarding the practice of Registered Nursing.
• Cognitive and technical knowledge with the ability to manage care across the continuum of care.
• Flexibility with work schedule and ability to act independently within established limits.
• Utilization of the nursing process in patient care provision, including administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, and providing education to patients and families.
• Knowledge of AORN standards.
• Understanding of medical terminology.
• Ability to work effectively in a patient care setting.

Language and Reasoning Skills:

• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to document care delivery actions and follow guidelines and procedures.
• Ability to present information and respond to questions from various groups, including management and the general public.
• Theoretical knowledge of nursing processes, care management, and continuity of care.
• Ability to solve practical problems, interpret varied instructions, and manage a variety of concrete variables.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May involve oversight of Administrative Assistants, Schedulers, and CSR Technicians in collaboration with the Charge Nurse.

Shift Information:

• Days/Night shifts available.
• Holiday coverage required.

Minimum Years of Experience:

4 years of relevant clinical experience is preferred.
