Mohs Clinical Assistant

RN, LPN, Medical Assistant, or Experienced Clinical Assistant

Dermatology Associates of West Michigan is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Mohs Clinical Assistant to join our Mohs surgery team. This position supports patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery , skin cancer treatment, wound care, and related dermatologic surgical procedures.

This role is different from a general clinic assistant position. The Mohs Clinical Assistant works in a procedure-based setting and supports the Mohs surgeon before, during, and after surgery. The position requires strong attention to detail, calm patient communication, comfort with surgical workflows, and the ability to help maintain a safe and organized surgical environment.

This position may be filled by a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Medical Assistant, Medical Assistant, or experienced clinical assistant with an interest in dermatology and outpatient surgical care.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for Mohs surgery and related dermatologic procedures.
• Review medical history, medications, allergies, and procedure details.
• Explain the Mohs process to patients in a calm, clear, and reassuring manner.
• Assist the Mohs surgeon during surgical procedures by preparing supplies, instruments, and equipment.
• Help maintain sterile technique and support infection control standards during procedures.
• Anticipate provider needs during surgical visits and help keep the procedure day moving efficiently.
• Assist with specimen handling, including accurate labeling, tracking, and delivery to the Mohs laboratory or pathology area.
• Monitor patient comfort and safety before, during, and after procedures.
• Provide wound care support, including dressing changes, pressure bandages, and post-operative care instructions.
• Review post-procedure instructions with patients, including wound care, activity restrictions, follow-up care, and signs of complications.
• Document surgical visit details, patient education, vital signs, wound care instructions, and follow-up needs in the electronic medical record.
• Prepare rooms between surgical cases and assist with room turnover.
• Clean, organize, and stock surgical rooms and procedure areas.
• Assist with instruments, supplies, inventory, and surgical suite readiness.
• Coordinate post-operative appointments and patient communication as needed.
• Work closely with the Mohs surgeon, Mohs laboratory staff, clinical team, and front office team to support a positive patient experience.
• Follow all HIPAA, infection control, safety, and office policies.

Qualifications

• Current RN license, LPN license, Medical Assistant certification, or relevant clinical experience preferred.
• Basic Life Support certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• Strong attention to detail, especially with documentation, specimen handling, and patient instructions.
• Calm, professional communication style with patients and coworkers.
• Ability to stay organized in a surgical/procedure-based setting.
• Dependable, flexible, and team-oriented.
• Comfortable assisting with wound care and procedure-based patient visits.

Preferred Experience

• Dermatology experience.
• Mohs surgery experience.
• Outpatient surgery, plastic surgery, procedural care, or wound care experience.
• Knowledge of sterile technique, aseptic technique, surgical instruments, or dermatology terminology.
• Experience working in a medical office or specialty clinic.

Schedule

This position supports the Mohs surgery team. Schedule may vary based on provider schedules, surgical days, and patient care needs.

No nights, weekends, or holidays.
