ACCOUNT CLERK/TYPIST

2026 SALARY: $21.54 per hour. Standard schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm.

BENEFITS: This position includes NYS Retirement participation, the option of Health Insurance or a Health Insurance buyout, Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays, and optional Dental and Vision coverage.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: At the time of the examination and for at least four (4) months prior, candidates must reside in Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery or Saratoga County.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:

The Account Clerk/Typist performs varied clerical and accounting functions designed to support departmental operations. Duties are illustrative and may change according to office needs.

  • Type and prepare correspondence, invoices, vouchers, reports, payrolls, forms and memoranda using an alphanumeric keyboard and word processing software.
  • Answer telephones, take accurate messages, direct callers or provide general information; follow up on requests and route issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Enter and post numeric data to accounting ledgers either manually or via computer systems, verifying and reconciling entries to ensure accuracy.
  • Accept and record cash and electronic payments, issue receipts, prepare checks and post/distribute payments to correct accounts; reconcile daily and monthly balances.
  • Interact with customers and vendors to obtain and clarify billing information, resolve disputes, and provide written or oral responses to inquiries.
  • Prepare financial or statistical summaries including account status reports, cash received or disbursed and other management reports used for decision making and reimbursement submissions.
  • May collect and compile payroll information, verify payroll computations and assist in payroll processing when necessary.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as personal computers, calculators, postage/mailing machines and perform light office cleaning as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency or individual education plan diploma, plus one of the following:

  • Completion of thirty (30) credit hours at a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university, including at least six (6) credit hours in accounting or bookkeeping and a course in typing, keyboarding or word processing; or
  • One year of experience maintaining financial accounts and records that included typing; or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of the two options above.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have practical experience entering accounting transactions and generating reports in QuickBooks. Successful candidates will demonstrate accuracy with numbers, confidentiality handling, good customer service skills and the ability to manage multiple routine tasks
