RN Emergency Department

Job Summary:

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting, ensuring safe, rapid, and accurate triage and treatment of patients. This role involves assessing and reassessing patients of all ages, managing pain, monitoring hemodynamic status, and collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to deliver optimal care. The ER RN maintains thorough documentation, supports patient and family education, and upholds safety and infection control standards in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities:

• Provide direct patient care and evaluate outcomes in the emergency care setting.
• Triage patients rapidly and accurately, assigning appropriate triage categories.
• Perform head-to-toe assessments and reassessments for patients including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations.
• Manage and reassess patient pain using appropriate techniques and educate patients and families on pain management.
• Monitor hemodynamic status and interpret cardiac monitoring results; identify and treat dysrhythmias.
• Maintain accurate nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, and responses.
• Address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families.
• Serve as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
• Formulate and evaluate teaching plans for patients and families based on learning needs.
• Administer medications safely, following the five medication rights and reducing medication errors.
• Prepare, hang, monitor, and discontinue IV fluids according to policy.
• Maintain departmental policies, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Ensure adequate supplies and equipment functionality; assist in cost containment.
• Assist physicians with emergency department procedures.
• Lead and train employees, supervise temporary staff, and allocate work as needed.
• Participate in performance improvement and professional development activities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Minimum one year of critical care experience; emergency room experience preferred.
• Current Registered Nurse license in California.
• Current American Heart Association certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS.
• Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
• Basic computer knowledge.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience in emergency room nursing beyond minimum requirements.
• Advanced skills in emergency procedures and patient education.

Special Considerations:

• Work in a high-acuity, fast-paced emergency room environment.
• Must be able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition.
• Responsible for maintaining patient safety and reducing medical errors.
• May lead and supervise other nursing staff.

Scheduling:

• Day shift schedule as specified for the Emergency Room Registered Nurse role.
• Shift assignments based on departmental needs and staffing requirements.
