Physician - Psychiatry (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program)

Summary The BHIP Psychiatrist serves as a core member of a multidisciplinary mental health team providing comprehensive psychiatric services to Veterans enrolled in the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP). The psychiatrist will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and coordination of care for patients with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the degree was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia. Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Residencies approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or other recognized programs with at least five years of verified U.S. practice may be considered by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full license and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they are authorized to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred experience: Addiction Medicine (required ASAM certification), Neuromodulation (experience or willingness to learn transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and/or ketamine). Physical requirements: visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, able to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, push for extended periods, transfer patients and objects, and use mechanical lifts when available. Ability to work in stressful situations, shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements such as TB screening or testing. Incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off‑site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA vehicles. Duties Provide outpatient psychiatric services, including face‑to‑face and telepsychiatry visits. Conduct psychopharmacologic evaluations, prescribe medications, and manage medication regimes. Administer medications, including intramuscular injections, in emergent or urgent situations. Provide crisis intervention and refer patients to appropriate treatment settings. Treat patients with psychiatric disorders listed in DSM‑5, excluding infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Participate in the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) for eligible employees. Perform medical care in accordance with approved privileges and all applicable state and federal guidelines in support of the Psychiatry Service.
