The University of Washington Investment Management Company (UWINCO) manages over $9 billion of endowment, operating, and life income funds for the University. The funds are invested in a diversified mix of traditional and alternative investments with a significant allocation outside of the United States. Reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer ("CIO"), the Investment Officer position will be responsible for multiple aspects of research and management of the University's investment portfolio. Responsibilities include assisting the CIO in setting policy, establishing guidelines and managing the University's overall investment programs. This position will also manage portions of the Fixed Income portfolio totaling over $3 billion in addition to training and mentoring the UWINCO Investment Analysts. The position requires evaluating and assessing complex financial, legal, and other relevant business risks in carrying out UWINCO's investment goals. Requires broad understanding of investment markets, statistical concepts, and economic factors affecting markets. This position is responsible for the selection and monitoring of fixed income equities and eligible managers. Risk and return trade-offs must be very well understood. A high level of professional discretion is crucial to this position and its interactions with senior UW leadership, UWINCO Board members, and members of the investment community. This position requires a high-level of independent judgment in planning and decision-making with regard to all aspects of investments within the UWINCO office. Must be capable of managing multiple and competing priorities with frequent tight deadlines skillfully, accurately and confidentially while demonstrating discretion and independent judgement in all areas of operation. Flexibility to work long hours if needed. Significant domestic and international travel required. The UWINCO Office manages over $9 billion of endowment, operating and life income funds. This position interacts regularly with the UW Board of Regents and UWINCO board members. The decisions made by these groups have an extremely significant impact on the financial healt of the University, and the Investment Officer positions are integral to the ability of the UWINCO team, CIO, Board of Regents and UWINCO Board to make decisions regarding the University's investments. Successful management of the Fixed Income portfolio has a multi-million dollar impact on the value of the University's endowment and operating funds. Endowment and operating distributions to campus currently total over $200 million annually and will continue to grow over time. Gains and/or losses in endowment and operating funds investment portfolios affect all campus departments. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Investment Management, Analysis & Due Diligence- Develop Fixed Income investment and monitoring guidelines and procedures.
- Develop, maintain, and improve internal process for selecting Fixed Income managers. Negotiate terms with investment managers on behalf of UWINCO.
- Develop management reports to assist senior management in managing the fund.
- Develop and maintain relationships with investment consultants and legal counsel providing advice on Fixed Income investments. Represent UWINCO at conferences and annual meetings held by fund managers and external research groups.
- Identify and evaluate new opportunities in the investment portfolios. Meet regularly with potential managers to evaluate potential fit in the portfolio.
- Perform advanced investment research functions as part of the overall portfolio construction process.
- Train and mentor UWINCO Investment Analysts.
- Participate in recruiting process for new Investment Analysts.
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business or Economics
- Six years' investment experience with emphasis on fixed income.
- Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to function independently.
- Self-directed individual with a strong work ethic.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in an environment requiring diplomacy and judgment in managing interactions with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization.
- Ability to adjust to rapid changes and execute fluid management of multiple priorities in a highly dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated success in roles requiring strategic, creative thinking and problem solving.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and statistical software.
- MBA or CFA preferred.
- Familiarity with investment management concepts and terminology.
- Familiarity with Bloomberg financial data system.
