About the Opportunity

We are partnering with an established real estate firm in McLean, VA seeking a talented, hands-on Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager to join its accounting and finance team.

This opportunity is ideal for an accounting professional with experience in real estate, REIT accounting, general ledger management, and financial reporting who enjoys rolling up their sleeves and taking ownership of day-to-day accounting responsibilities.

The position offers exposure to real estate investment accounting, SEC reporting, SOX compliance, financial statement preparation, and technical accounting matters.

We are open to considering candidates at either the Senior Accountant or Accounting Manager level, depending on experience and qualifications.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong, detail-oriented accounting professional who is comfortable performing hands-on accounting work rather than focusing exclusively on reviewing the work of others.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Month-End Close

• Perform hands-on general ledger accounting and day-to-day accounting activities.
• Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries.
• Support monthly and quarterly financial close processes.
• Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
• Manage accounting activities related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash transactions.
• Research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
• Maintain accurate accounting records in accordance with GAAP.
• Support junior accounting team members while maintaining direct ownership of assigned accounting responsibilities.

Real Estate & REIT Accounting

• Perform accounting activities related to real estate investments and property operations.
• Apply straight-line accounting principles, including straight-line rent recognition and related lease accounting.
• Maintain depreciation, amortization, and fixed asset schedules.
• Account for capital expenditures (CapEx) and related transactions.
• Review acquisition documents, lease agreements, and other real estate-related financial information.
• Support property-level accounting and financial reporting activities.
• Ensure appropriate accounting treatment of real estate transactions.

Financial Reporting, SEC Reporting & SOX Compliance

• Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
• Support SEC reporting and financial disclosures for publicly traded investment entities.
• Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for regulatory filings.
• Assist with SOX compliance, internal control documentation, and related testing requirements.
• Prepare financial analyses and supporting information for leadership and Board reporting.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis activities.
• Maintain accurate and complete financial reporting documentation.

Audit & Technical Accounting

• Assist with quarterly reviews and year-end financial statement audits.
• Coordinate with external auditors and prepare audit schedules and supporting workpapers.
• Research technical accounting matters and support the application of relevant accounting standards.
• Identify and communicate accounting issues and recommended solutions.
• Support special accounting projects and financial reporting initiatives.

Process Improvement & Team Collaboration

• Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve reporting efficiency.
• Support accounting system enhancements and process improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with accounting leadership and other team members to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
• Provide guidance and support to junior accounting professionals as needed.
• Take ownership of assigned responsibilities while contributing to broader team objectives.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
• 3–5+ years of relevant accounting experience.
• Real estate / REIT accounting experience required.
• Strong hands-on experience with general ledger accounting and month-end close.
• Knowledge of straight-line accounting, lease accounting, depreciation, amortization, and capital expenditures.
• Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and account reconciliations.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and take ownership of accounting responsibilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A proactive, hands-on approach with strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA certification or progress toward obtaining a CPA.
• Combination of public accounting and industry accounting experience.
• Experience supporting publicly traded companies or investment funds.
• Exposure to SEC reporting, financial disclosures, and SOX compliance.
• Experience with Yardi or similar real estate accounting systems.
• Familiarity with Workiva/Wdesk or comparable financial reporting platforms.
• Experience supporting external audits and technical accounting research.
• Previous experience mentoring or supporting junior accounting professionals.
• CPA certification is preferred but not required.

Compensation & Benefits

• Base Salary: $105,000–$115,000
