Summary The Director of Operating Room (OR), Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing Services is responsible for the overall management of the OR, including surgical teams (Registered Nurses and Surgical Technicians), and Sterile Processing Services. This role ensures the delivery of safe and high-quality surgical care to both pediatric and adult trauma patients, including those in a Level I trauma center. Responsibilities Leadership and Team Integration: Lead and manage daily operations of OR, Endoscopy, and Sterile Processing Services departments, ensuring optimal workflow and leveraging technology and informatics solutions to enhance patient care outcomes. Oversee integration of departments under a unified vision that fosters collaboration, open communication, and mutual respect, promoting innovative care delivery models to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and ensure seamless departmental workflows. Develop and implement staffing plans, manage recruitment efforts, and ensure staffing levels align with operational and patient care needs across both departments. Identify and update relevant competencies for staff to align with operational and quality goals, ensuring staff have necessary skills for optimal care and high performance. Oversee retention strategies to ensure long‑term staff satisfaction, engagement, and reduced turnover, including providing ongoing professional development opportunities. Clinical Operations and Patient Care Pathways: Ensure delivery of safe, high‑quality surgical care to both pediatric and adult trauma patients, leveraging strengths of teams to improve outcomes. Stay current with clinical advancements, implementing evidence‑based strategies and innovative technologies, establishing metrics and benchmarks to align initiatives with organizational goals for quality and safety. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize surgical schedules, patient flow, and instrument sterilization processes, integrating informatics tools to reduce bottlenecks and improve perioperative efficiency. Drive performance improvements through evidence‑based practices and performance data to monitor and adjust staffing, workflows, and departmental processes for optimal care delivery and operational effectiveness. Maintain standardized clinical pathways for the intraoperative phase of care. Regulatory Compliance, Quality, Risk Management: Monitor clinical outcomes, identify areas for improvement, implement quality improvement initiatives, ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and accreditation standards (The Joint Commission, AORN, etc.), manage departmental accreditation processes, and collaborate with system directors. Oversee risk mitigation efforts, infection control protocols, and trauma care standards. System Approach and Collaboration: Work closely with leaders across the healthcare system to standardize clinical workflows, care delivery, and best practices, ensuring alignment with system‑wide protocols. Promote a culture of collaboration and shared learning across departments and facilities, fostering a unified approach to patient care, encouraging teamwork, knowledge sharing, technology optimization, and adoption of best practices. Continuous Learning: Act as a team player, learning from peers in other hospitals and integrating insights into operations. Managerial Audits and Performance Evaluation: Oversee development and execution of regular managerial audits, assess efficiency, compliance, and clinical outcomes, evaluate departmental performance, and implement corrective action plans. Fiscal Management and Resource Allocation: Participate in budgeting and monitoring staffing‑related budgets, ensuring alignment with operational needs and fiscal responsibility. Identify opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining quality; collaborate with revenue integrity finance team to ensure accurate billing and coding, monitor documentation accuracy, and provide financial analysis. Resource Optimization: Ensure staffing levels, equipment, and materials are utilized cost‑effectively while maintaining high operational standards. External Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with vendors, regulatory bodies, and academic institutions to support department operations and compliance. Technology Integration: Oversee integration and optimization of cutting‑edge technologies into OR and Sterile Processing Services, ensuring staff training and enhanced patient care and operational efficiency. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree in nursing or related field such as healthcare administration or equivalent. Consideration for internal candidates in a Master’s program. Licensure: Registered Nurse licensure in Rhode Island or via Nurse Licensure Compact; Certification in perioperative nursing (e.g., CNOR) preferred; AHA BLS and ACLS certifications required; other certifications related to surgical services, sterile processing, or trauma care highly desirable. Experience: 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in perioperative services as intraoperative RN, including at least 3 years in a leadership or management role. Experience managing both OR and Sterile Processing Services departments in a large hospital or Level I trauma center. Ability to apply Highly Reliable Organization principles. Experience with multidisciplinary teams, driving improvements in clinical outcomes, patient flow, and operational efficiency.
