Volz Company is seeking a dynamic, student-focused, and highly organized Assistant Director of Housing to join our team at The Peaks at Columbia College in Tuolumne County, California.
The Assistant Director of Housing serves as a key member of the Housing Leadership Team and supports the overall management and daily operations of student housing. This position assists in creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging residential community while overseeing residence life, occupancy management, student conduct, customer service, and administrative operations. This position is full time, and requires the candidate to live on-site in the housing provided.
The Assistant Director works collaboratively with Columbia College administration, Campus Safety, Facilities, and community partners to provide an exceptional residential experience that supports student success. This position supervises student staff, assists with strategic planning, and serves as the Director’s designee in their absence.
Responsibilities*
The Assistant Director of Housing’s primary responsibility is to support the daily operations of The Peaks at Columbia College while creating a positive, safe, and supportive living environment for residents.
*The responsibilities listed below may not be all-inclusive. The Volz Company team will provide support and guidance, especially related to best practices and standard operating procedures.
Student Success and Residential Experience:
- Foster an inclusive, welcoming, and academically supportive residential community.
- Develop initiatives that promote student engagement, retention, leadership, and personal growth.
- Meet individually with students experiencing academic, behavioral, or personal challenges.
- Provide crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and referrals to campus and community resources.
- Support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives within the residential community.
Residence Life Leadership:
- Supervising Resident Assistants and maintenance.
- Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and develop student employees.
- Conduct weekly staff meetings and one-on-one supervisory meetings once a month.
- Oversee community programming that promotes wellness, academic success, and community engagement.
- Ensure student staff maintain appropriate documentation and follow established protocols.
Housing Operations:
- Assist with the day-to-day management of housing operations.
- Oversee occupancy management, assignments, waitlists, transfers, and room changes.
- Coordinate move-in, move-out, room inspections, and turnover processes.
- Assist with annual housing applications and License Agreement processes.
- Ensure compliance with housing policies, procedures, and License Agreements.
- Support budget tracking and operational planning.
Leasing and Occupancy Management:
- Assist with occupancy and revenue goals through effective leasing practices.
- Conduct property tours for prospective students and their families.
- Coordinate housing marketing and recruitment efforts with campus partners.
- Assist students throughout the application and licensing process.
- Monitor occupancy trends and recommend strategies to maximize utilization.
Student Conduct and Policy Administration:
- Interpret and enforce housing policies and community standards.
- Investigate behavioral incidents and documentation submitted by staff.
- Conduct student conduct meetings and implement appropriate educational sanctions.
- Maintain accurate conduct records and incident reports.
- Coordinate with College administration regarding student conduct matters.
Community Safety and Emergency Management:
- Serve in the on-call rotation for emergency response.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies involving residents and facilities.
- Coordinate emergency response efforts with Campus Safety, local law enforcement, fire agencies, and emergency responders.
- Assist with emergency preparedness training, evacuation procedures, and fire drills.
- Ensure compliance with life-safety regulations and risk-management practices.
Facilities and Property Management:
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel regarding work orders and preventive maintenance.
- Conduct regular inspections of apartments and common areas.
- Monitor facility conditions and identify capital improvement needs.
- Assist with vendor coordination and contractor access.
- Support damage assessments and documentation.
Administrative Leadership:
- Maintain accurate housing records, occupancy reports, and student files.
- Assist with reporting, data collection, and annual assessments.
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and operational documents.
- Assist with policy development and continuous process improvement.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records in accordance with FERPA and institutional policies.
Campus Collaboration:
- Develop collaborative relationships with Columbia College departments, including Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Counseling, Student Services, Campus Safety, Facilities, the Business Office, and Athletics.
- Participate in campus committees and student-success initiatives.
- Represent Housing at orientation programs, recruitment events, and campus activities.
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director of Housing with strategic planning and goal implementation.
- Provide operational leadership in the Director’s absence.
- Assist with budget development and fiscal oversight.
- Recommend improvements to policies, procedures, and resident services.
- Participate in assessment and long-range planning initiatives.
- Support employee development and performance management.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time, exempt position.
- Live-on position (See below)
- Generally, Tuesday through Saturday, with the schedule varying based on operational needs and approval by The Director of Housing.
- Evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities are required.
- Ability to respond to emergencies outside normal business hours.
- Some overnight responsibilities may be required.
- On-Call availability will be discussed.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to walk multiple flights of stairs and throughout the housing community.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to conduct apartment inspections and respond to emergencies.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Competitive salary based on education and experience, with a range of $55,000-$60,000

Minimum Qualifications:
- Preferred Associates degree and/or Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Business Administration, Public Administration, Education, Hospitality Management, or a related field.
- Three years of progressively responsible experience in student housing, residence life, property management, higher education, or a related field.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Valid California Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience supervising student employees.
- Experience with student conduct administration.
- Experience using housing management software, with Entrata experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Fair Housing laws, FERPA, the Clery Act, and Title IX.
- Experience in crisis management and emergency response.
