Welder

Job Title

Under general supervision, maintain and repair building metalwork and equipment for the district. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all physical fixtures in district facilities.

Education/Certification

High School or GED preferred

Valid AWS Certified Welder (CW) certification or Steel Structures Welding Certification

Clear and valid Texas driver's license

Experience

Four years experience in welding and metal fabrication

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
• Ability to estimate materials
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations
• Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
• Ability to use hand and power tools

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Demonstrate acceptable work habits, including teamwork, initiative, and dependability.
2. Report to work on time each day.
3. Perform the welder's duties to construct and maintain the building's metalwork and equipment in good repair.
4. Plan and lay out work from blueprints, drawings, models, or verbal instructions.
5. Be able to use a variety of hand tools and measuring instruments.
6. Make standard shop computations related to the dimensions of work and the amount of materials needed for each project.
7. Select materials necessary for the work.
8. Repair windows, furniture, doors, frames, gates, overhead doors, and hardware as necessary.
9. Construct metal structures as directed.
10. Inspect building exterior and interior, playground equipment, and grounds; assign, oversee, and/or perform maintenance and repairs.
11. Detect and report needed repairs on building structures and their systems.

Safety

1. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
2. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
3. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to make sure equipment is in safe operating condition.
4. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Working Conditions

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; may use small hand tools and power tools; light truck or van

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel
