Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Mathematics Position Overview Organization: Department of Sciences and Mathematics Title: Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Mathematics Position Description The University of Washington Tacoma (UWT) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics (Operations Research) to join the Department of Sciences and Mathematics (SAM) in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (SIAS). We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community This is a full-time (100% FTE) position with a 9-month service period (September 16 - June 15, each year) and an expected start date of September 16, 2027. The initial appointment will be for a three-year term, eligible for reappointment after successful academic review. The base salary range for this position will be $8,889 to $9,556 per month ($80,000 to $86,000 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will be expected to perform highly effective and inclusive teaching, using a variety of pedagogical techniques and technologies, in an urban-serving campus environment. They will be prepared to develop and teach courses serving students from majors including mathematics, engineering, environmental science, biomedical sciences, business, social science, technology, and education. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general undergraduate mathematics courses, mentor undergraduates, and serve as advisors to mathematics majors for capstone projects. Faculty at UWT are expected to teach multiple modalities, including in-person, online, and hybrid courses. Mathematics instruction is typically offered in the in-person modality. The expected teaching load for this position is set at a level equivalent to six (6) standard courses per academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in one or more of the following subject areas: precalculus, the calculus sequence through multivariable calculus, as well as statistics. In addition, positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to experience or interest to teach proof and writing-focused classes. Our department is strongly committed to authentic undergraduate research experiences. This position will support undergraduate research and experiential learning opportunities in their disciplinary area. Additionally, this position is expected to successfully mentor undergraduate students with diverse experiences and backgrounds, in an academic setting. The successful candidate will also be expected to perform research and service in the candidate’s area of expertise of Operations Research or related fields, broadly interpreted to include, but is not limited to, optimization, decision analysis, and scheduling. This will include the development and maintenance of a rigorous scholarly agenda and actively participating in unit-specific activities such as serving as a faculty advisor for mathematics majors, actively engaging in department and program meetings, participating in shared governance, and contributing to mathematics and department workgroups. Additional service expectations include mentoring students, participating in school and campus committees, and active membership within relevant professional organizations. All University of Washington faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research, and service.
