Mechanical Technician

The expected hiring range for this position is: $31.13-$37.96. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on scope, responsibilities, qualifications, and other business and market considerations. About the Role Fermilab is seeking a Senior Mechanical Technician who collaborates by nature. The successful candidate will work with engineers, designers, technicians, and scientists to build parts and assemblies that support beamline components for the External Beamlines machines. Under general supervision, based on relevant experience or academic study, the candidate will provide moderately complex technical support for an assigned area, fabricate, set‑up, operate, test, repair, and modify a variety of moderately complex mechanical equipment, vacuum systems, and devices, and perform ESH&Q duties. Day-to-Day Responsibilities Fabricate, assemble, install, and remove mechanical parts, sub‑assemblies, support assemblies, and beamline components in the External Beamlines machines, based on drawings, diagrams, and sketches. Assist in construction and assembly of support equipment. Prepare and test equipment for operation. Direct activities of a crew of technicians for assigned tasks. Plan the lifting and rigging of components weighing up to 40,000lbs. Generate or assist in generating work plans for tasks, including relevant procedures, hazard analyses, and safety documentation per the Fermilab Environment, Safety and Health Manual. Monitor and troubleshoot operating vacuum and fluids systems. Conduct periodic safety inspections of the area of assignment. Assist with identification, packaging, control, and disposal of radioactive waste. Procure and maintain inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment. Assist in implementation of equipment and system designs. Collaborate on engineering designs. Drive quality in all job aspects. Enter relevant work into logbooks and electronically prepare and compile technical information into databases, spreadsheets, and other computing software. Qualifications Minimum required education: HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent) plus 7+ years of extensive related experience, or 5+ years at a DOE laboratory or in a technical skill of strategic importance (e.g., cryo, radio frequency, radiation protection, clean room). Physical activity: heavy lifting up to 50lbs; ability to work at heights up to 10ft; work on stairs, ladders, man lifts; stand for up to 4hrs per day; work near vibrating equipment; confined spaces; high magnetic fields; occasional outdoor, hot environments. Legal operation of cars and light trucks; availability for overtime. Ability to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard, tunnel entry, underground, and radiation worker requirements. Familiarity with epoxies, solvents, glues, and other chemicals; use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Proficiency in Windows PC environment with MS Word and Excel. Experience writing standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ability to work independently following verbal or written instructions. Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Teamwork and ability to assume team leadership responsibilities. Preferred: OSHA Construction Safety 30‑Hour Training, forklift qualifications, oversight of welding/fabrication work, overhead crane qualifications, rigging experience, electrical-electronic experience. Required: Overhead crane qualifications and rigging experience. Work Arrangement This is an onsite role located in the Batavia office. Work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs.
