Medical Director
PhaseV (HQ in Boston, R&D in Tel Aviv) is a cutting-edge startup pushing innovation in the drug development process to bring new treatments to more patients in a more efficient and precise way. Leveraging advanced causal inference and machine learning, PhaseV detects hidden signals in clinical data and extracts actionable insights for planning optimal trials.
Our proprietary ML-based platform powers four core product modules:
- Response Optimizer — uncovers patient response heterogeneity to identify optimal treatment populations
- Trial Optimizer — designs more efficient, adaptive clinical trials tailored to sponsor objectives
- Portfolio Optimizer — supports strategic portfolio-level decision-making across development programs
- Clin Ops Optimizer — streamlines clinical operations for faster, more precise trial execution
Collaborating top pharmaceutical companies, as well as multiple CROs and biotechs, we are poised to make a significant impact on how drugs are developed and brought to market.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Medical Director to join our team in Boston to lead the clinical aspects of our data-driven approach to optimizing clinical trials. This is a high-impact, externally facing role that blends deep clinical expertise with business development, scientific communication, and product strategy. This role is based at our Cambridge, MA headquarters on a hybrid schedule (2–3 days/week in-office). We're open to candidates outside of Boston who are willing to travel to HQ on a regular monthly basis — we find that in-person time meaningfully accelerates collaboration.
The Medical Director will serve as a key clinical voice across all four PhaseV product modules, supporting both internal teams and external stakeholders — from data scientists and engineers to pharma executives and KOLs. In the U.S. market specifically, this role will play a significant part in business development efforts, thought leadership, and marketing, including speaking engagements, conference representation, and content creation such as blog posts and white papers.
The ideal candidate holds an M.D. with a strong interest in leveraging advanced statistical and machine learning methods to improve clinical trial design and execution.
This role requires up to 25% travel, primarily for industry conferences, client meetings, and business development engagements.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Scientific Leadership
- Provide clinical oversight and interpretation for PhaseV's causal ML-based models across all four product modules (Response Optimizer, Trial Optimizer, Portfolio Optimizer, Clin Ops Optimizer)
- Ensure the highest standard of clinical relevance and accuracy in data outputs, platform recommendations, and client deliverables
- Serve as a clinical expert in client-facing discussions, translating complex data science outputs into actionable medical insights
- Provide guidance to internal data science, engineering, and product teams on clinical concepts relevant to ongoing projects
Business Development Support
- Collaborate closely with the business development team to communicate PhaseV's clinical value proposition to pharma, biotech, and CRO partners
- Participate in client meetings, partnership discussions, and proposal development as a clinical subject matter expert
- Develop and refine presentation slides for BD meetings, pitches, and scientific discussions, translating platform capabilities and clinical evidence into compelling visual narratives
- Support contract and scope-of-work discussions where clinical expertise is critical to positioning PhaseV's solutions
Thought Leadership & Marketing (U.S.-focused)
- Represent PhaseV at industry conferences, scientific symposia, and advisory boards as a speaker and clinical spokesperson
- Author or co-author blog posts, white papers, and scientific publications to build PhaseV's external profile in the clinical trials and drug development community
- Contribute to marketing materials, case studies, and client-facing content that highlight clinical outcomes and platform value
New Product Development
- Partner with the product and data science teams to inform the development of new platform capabilities and product modules
- Provide clinical feasibility input during early-stage product ideation and design
- Help define clinically meaningful use cases, endpoints, and success criteria for new offerings
Qualifications
Required
- M.D. degree
- Excellent communication and presentation skills; comfortable in both scientific, business development, and executive-level settings
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary startup environment
- Curiosity and willingness to engage with advanced biostatistics and causal machine learning (technical expertise not required)
Preferred
- Experience supporting or leading business development efforts
- Experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or CRO environments
- Experience in health technology, AI in healthcare, or related fields
- Track record of thought leadership: publications, conference presentations, or industry writing
- Prior exposure to adaptive trial design, Bayesian methods, or AI/ML in clinical settings
- Working knowledge of clinical trial methodology and regulatory frameworks (FDA, EMA, GCP)
- Second advanced degree (Ph.D. or MBA) is a differentiator but not required
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation: The expected base salary range for this role is $255,000–$300,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
- In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for a performance bonus and equity compensation.
- Final compensation will be determined based on the candidate's skills, experience, and overall fit for the role.
Why PhaseV
- Be at the frontier of clinical trial innovation — your work directly shapes how drugs are developed and approved
- Work alongside a world-class team of data scientists, clinicians, and operators who are genuinely passionate about impact
- Diverse, intellectually demanding problem set — no two projects are alike
- Highly collaborative, flat startup culture with meaningful ownership and career growth
- Dual-continent presence (Boston + Tel Aviv) with a global client base
PhaseV is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
