Registered Nurse - Chemotherapy

The Chemotherapy Nurse provides both direct and indirect patient services to chemotherapy patients, ensuring safe and high-quality care. This role involves effective communication with physicians, nurse practitioners, and co-workers regarding patient conditions and relevant policies and procedures. The nurse must respond quickly to changes in patient and unit conditions, embodying the values of teamwork and compassion in their practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care for chemotherapy patients, including administering chemotherapy treatments as prescribed.
• Initiate and manage the computerized Plan of Care/Standard of Care upon patient admission.
• Engage in administrative functions, teaching, triage, and counseling as needed.
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals to communicate patient status and care updates.
• Participate in the organization's performance improvement initiatives.
• Show empathy and compassion to patients experiencing pain, grief, or trauma.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold the rights and responsibilities of patients.
• Participate in required educational programs related to the position.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Licenses and Certifications

• Required: Current RN license in the State of Oregon, BLS certification, ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider Card.
• Preferred: Oncology Nursing Certification or the willingness to obtain within three years of hire.

Experience

• Required: A minimum of three years of experience in acute care or medical/surgical nursing.
• Preferred: Previous oncology experience.

• Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make decisions based on measurable criteria.
• Effective communication with diverse populations, including patients, families, and healthcare teams.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with coworkers.
• Competence in providing care that respects the patient's age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial needs.

Physical Requirements

This position involves various physical and sensory demands, including:

• Sufficient auditory ability to detect sounds such as patient alarms and verbal communication.
• Visual acuity for observing patient conditions and reading documentation.
• Tactile perception for assessing physical characteristics during patient care.
• Motor coordination for performing tasks with medical equipment and safely assisting patients.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently and assist with the repositioning of patients weighing more than 100 pounds as needed, using appropriate lifting techniques.
• Frequent walking and standing throughout the shift.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily performed in an indoor healthcare environment, exposed to variable temperatures and potential infectious diseases. Employees must adhere to safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment as required. The work setting can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring adaptability and responsiveness to multiple demands.
