YOUTH PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is seeking a full-time Youth Programs Coordinator. Working within the Education and Public Engagement department, this role will assist in the coordination and implementation of the museum's new teen initiatives, the NewMu Teen Fellowship and the Bowery Art Space drop-in program, as well as with the School Partnership program.

The NewMu Teen Fellowship is a two-year, intensive after-school program for New York City high school students. Working directly with artists, museum staff, and community members, fellows gain creative and professional development through mentorship, work experience, and leadership opportunities. Their voices and ideas are amplified by projects including an exhibition of their art and a Youth Summit.

The Bowery Art Space is a monthly, after-school, drop-in program for high school students. Facilitated by the New Museum's Teaching Artists and guided by the museum's learner-centered and culturally sustaining pedagogy, teens experiment with materials through hands-on workshops and explore artworks through discussion.

The School Partnership program provides high school teachers and students with resources, workshops, museum tours, and direct interaction with artists to support the New York Department of Education's Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-S) framework. Dedicated Teaching Artists work with teachers to create lesson plans that highlight marginalized voices and support the diverse racial, linguistic, and cultural identities of students within NYC's public schools.

Hours Per Week: 40 hours, Monday-Friday, 10 AM- 6 PM (Some evenings and weekends)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • With oversight from the Assistant Director of Education and collaboration with New Museum Teaching Artists, develop curricula for the NewMu Teen Fellowship and Bowery Art Space drop-in program.
  • Teach across programming areas on an as-needed basis.
  • Facilitate all administrative tasks related to teen programming, including scheduling Teaching Artists and guest artists, processing invoices and receipts, maintaining department files and calendars, organizing field trips and artist visits, and coordinating communications with teenagers, parents, and teachers.
  • Support Teaching Artists with curriculum development for School Partnerships and build connections across teens, school, and educator programs.
  • Assist with creating and managing budgets for current and future programming.
  • Oversee all aspects of tracking program statistics that includes preparing mid- and end of year reports for grants.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of evaluation projects.
  • Provide day-of support for all teen programs, including weekly sessions, large-scale teen events and off-site field trips.
  • Work closely with other departments across the Museum to coordinate all logistics for teen programs and events.
  • With assistance from the Assistant Director of Education, work to cultivate and sustain relationships with local high schools and develop an outreach and recruitment strategy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in arts administration, youth education, and/or teaching.
  • BA or BFA in Art History, Art Education, or related field required; MA or MFA, or significant equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing programming for NYC high school students.
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art and relevant learning theories, acquired through study and practice.
  • Demonstrated success in generating and maintaining mutually respectful communication and attentive engagement with groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
  • Knowledge of the New York Department of Education's Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CR-S) framework preferred
  • Language skills are a plus, especially in Spanish or Mandarin.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The New Museum's mission is simply "New Art, New Ideas." Founded in 1977 by curator Marcia Tucker with a bold vision of presenting contemporary culture in a critical and scholarly context, the New Museum has been a leader among contemporary art museums for over 40 years and is among the most respected internationally for its risk-taking curatorial program. The New Museum is a center for exhibitions, information, and documentation about living artists from around the world, focusing on emerging and under-recognized voices, and providing a platform for the artists who are defining our cultural moment. In 2007, the New Museum made history with the inauguration of its first permanent building at 235 Bowery designed by the Tokyo-based firm SANAA. Since that time, over 4 million have visited or attended programs and events, and the Museum has 155 exhibitions featuring over 600 artists from 60+ countries in our galleries, as well as over 1,200 public programs ranging from live performances, conferences, residencies, screening, after-school programs, and family days.
