Industrial Hygienist

As a senior Industrial Hygienist with the Environmental and Health Services Office, you will develop, implement, and maintain Center-level environmental and occupational health programs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and NASA requirements. You will maintain oversight of the Center's environmental and occupational health programs and support administration of the occupational medical clinic. Duties Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Maintains oversight of Federal regulatory and Agency-level requirements; develops, implements, and maintains Center-level Industrial Hygiene/Health Physics and Occupational Health programs to ensure compliance and provide a safe workplace. Provides services for Center compliance with hazardous materials management and chemical use restrictions. Coordinates with the occupational medical clinic and employee assistance programs for the Center to ensure compliance to medical surveillance of NASA and regulatory requirements. Serves as a technical expert responsible for the coordination of the Center's Industrial Hygiene programs, including exposure assessments, hazard evaluations, occupational health, and regulatory compliance. Coordinates the development, selection, and oversight of Government-provided Environmental and Occupational Health services, ensuring regulatory and policy requirements are followed. Qualifications Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. To qualify for GS-11 One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level: Conducting exposure assessments involving chemical, physical, or biological hazards by collecting and analyzing data, comparing results to established standards, and recommending measures to support occupational health and regulatory compliance; Assessing occupational health hazards in a variety of workplace settings (industrial, laboratory, office); Utilizing a variety of exposure assessment methodologies for chemical, physical and biological hazards; OR Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field OR Completed 3 full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in an appropriate field. OR Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above To qualify for GS-12 One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level: Evaluating occupational hazards, conducting exposure assessments, and supporting compliance with State, Federal, and organizational requirements. Responding to events with occupational health hazards, mitigating occupational health hazards; advising management to ensure the health and safety of employees. Analyzing a variety of exposure assessment methodologies for chemical, physical and biological hazards; utilizing a variety of techniques to anticipate and control potentially dangerous situations in the workplace and the community. To qualify for GS-13 Providing guidance and consultation for concepts, principles, or practices of Health Physics to ensure employee safety; Supporting occupational health programs to ensure compliance with state and federal, and organizational requirements. Implementing industrial hygiene practices to identify occupational hazards and recommend mitigation measures in support of workplace safety requirements Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience. Education Basic Requirements: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science OR Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree that included a major in engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene OR Have a Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). U.S. degrees must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations.
