Occupational Safety Technical Advisor (BWC Technical Resource Consultant) PN 20068090 & 20068089 (260004ZB) Work Location William Green Building, 30 West Spring Street, Columbus 43215-2256 Compensation $40.40/hr – $57.67/hr Schedule Full‑time, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Primary Job Skill Insurance Technical Skills Insurance, Occupational Safety Job Description Responsibilities: Serve as a safety expert by analyzing data, researching solutions, monitoring regulations, and creating educational materials to help prevent workplace injuries. Provide training for Ohio employers and BWC employees, identify training needs, and develop new classes to improve safety knowledge. Coach and mentor field staff by assessing their skills, offering feedback, creating new‑hire training, and ensuring consistent quality across the state. Conduct quality reviews of on‑site safety activities and consultative services to maintain accuracy and effectiveness. Lead regulator updates and special projects, including updating Ohio safety rules and presenting changes to the Board of Directors. OR completion of an undergraduate core program in business administration, risk management or a related field of study AND 3 years’ experience in a public or private organization involved in risk management or loss control activities AND 3 years’ experience in policy development. OR an equivalent of the minimum class qualifications listed above. Candidates with demonstrated safety experience are preferred. Job Skills: Insurance Major Worker Characteristics: Knowledge of safety management, physical science, safety sciences, safety engineering, safety culture, safety accountability, leadership consulting, perception surveys, structured interviews, behavioral safety, consulting skills, construction & industrial safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, hazard assessment, loss prevention strategies, DSH standard paragraphs, local, state & federal safety policies, procedures & regulations (e.g., Ohio Administrative Codes, OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, ACGIH), knowledge of safety & hygiene practices, conducting safety & health audits, use of all relevant safety equipment, knowledge of Workers’ Compensation policies & procedures. Skill in: Operating a personal computer (Microsoft Office including Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, PDF, MS Project, SharePoint), good verbal & writing skills, use of analytical tools. Ability to: Deal with many complex situations & determine appropriate actions, read/write/understand detailed technical reports, communicate effectively with all levels, complete routine forms, maintain accurate records, prepare concise accurate reports, proofread technical material, recognize errors, use proper research methods, prepare & deliver speeches, gather, collate & classify information & data, work independently, handle sensitive inquiries, draft & edit administrative policies & procedures. Unusual Working Conditions: Position is overtime exempt. Salary Information: Hourly wage is expected to be paid at step 1 of the pay range for new state employees. Current state employees will be placed in the appropriate step based on union contract or applicable code. Movement to the next step occurs after six months of satisfactory performance, followed by annual advancement until the highest step is reached. Cost‑of‑living adjustments and longevity supplements may apply after five years of state service.
