Outreach and Engagement Coordinator, Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use

The Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use (BADU) works to close gaps and reduce overall morbidity and mortality related to alcohol and substance use among New Yorkers. BADU develops, implements, and evaluates interventions and prevention strategies through contracting of treatment, recovery and support services; policy analysis and development; epidemiology and surveillance; dissemination of treatment and management guidelines; harm reduction initiatives; public and provider outreach and education; and community involvement and interagency collaboration. The Bureau amplifies the voices of those most impacted and focuses on inequitable structural, social, service, and communication factors that drive disparities. The Office of Research, Surveillance, Policy and Communications within the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Use is responsible for conducting timely surveillance of alcohol and drug-related morbidity and mortality in NYC, reporting on key trends and disparate impacts by demographic group and neighborhood, conducting drug‑checking services and surveillance of the unregulated drug supply in NYC, performing program evaluation and monitoring, and leading community engagement and communications campaigns to educate New Yorkers about alcohol and drug‑related health risks. Position Summary The Outreach and Engagement Coordinator reports to the Communications and Community Engagement Manager and works with community engagement staff across the bureau to organize outreach and community events and provide administrative support for communications projects. Job Duties and Responsibilities Directly support BADU staff in outreach event planning and promotion. Manage administrative tasks and logistics, including developing draft flyers, emails, meeting agendas, scheduling meetings, and contacting event partners. Provide administrative support to BADU communications priorities, including tracking material inventory and material requests. Manage online materials inventory, monitoring materials posted online and coordinating with the agency’s web team to ensure information and translations are up to date. Support the development of coordinated community engagement and public messaging plan. Attend outreach events in all five boroughs and remain on call for the day‑of support for key outreach events, including Pride outreach events in June. Assist on site during community events and act as main point of contact. Support the assembly of outreach materials such as naloxone kits, fentanyl test strip kits, and backpacks. Make and track supplies for all events, including managing invoices, storage, and transportation of supplies. Preferred Skills Experience planning or coordinating events of a variety of sizes. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. Experience managing multiple tasks simultaneously and managing projects. Ability to work in multicultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable communicating by phone, email, virtually, and in person. Ability to work in the community and travel as required. Strength to stand for long periods of time and work in outdoor environments. Knowledge of substance use issues, mental health, and harm reduction practice and theory, including syringe exchange, overdose prevention and education for HIV and hepatitis C prevention. Competency conducting outreach and providing harm reduction/overdose education to people who use drugs, providers who work with people who use drugs, and community members. Minimum Qualifications Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community‑centered activities related to the duties described above; or High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community‑centered activities related to the duties described above; or Education and/or experience equivalent to descriptions 1 or 2, with a minimum of one year of experience as in description 1. Residency Requirement: New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. City employees who have worked for the City for two continuous years may be eligible to reside in nearby counties.
