Sr. Payroll Specialist(Law firm required)

Hybrid / Remote Flexibility — California based, San Francisco Preferred; in office weekly or bi-weekly (remote for candidates outside of SFO area) Compensation: $100,000 – $140,000 annually Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt A well-established, technology-forward law firm is seeking a Senior Payroll Specialist to join its accounting and finance team. This position offers a highly flexible hybrid/remote structure, with preference given to candidates based in the San Francisco Bay Area who can attend the office weekly or bi-weekly as needed. This role is ideal for a payroll professional who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced professional services environment and brings strong expertise in multi-state payroll administration, compliance, and payroll systems management. Position Overview The Senior Payroll Specialist will oversee end-to-end payroll operations for employees and partner-level compensation across multiple jurisdictions. In addition to processing payroll, this individual will serve as a key resource on payroll compliance, reporting, process optimization, and systems enhancements. The position partners closely with HR, Accounting, and firm leadership to ensure payroll operations remain accurate, compliant, efficient, and scalable. Key Responsibilities Payroll Administration & Compliance Process semi-monthly payroll for employees and partner compensation arrangements Maintain payroll records and ensure timely, accurate payroll execution across multiple states Monitor and interpret payroll-related regulatory updates, including California wage and hour requirements Support audits, reconciliations, tax reporting, and payroll-related documentation Manage benefit deductions, retirement contributions, and related payroll adjustments Systems & Process Improvement Maintain and optimize payroll workflows within ADP Workforce Now or comparable platforms Identify opportunities to streamline payroll operations through automation and process enhancements Participate in payroll system upgrades, integrations, and implementation projects Generate recurring and ad hoc payroll reports for leadership and finance teams Employee & Leadership Support Serve as a primary contact for payroll-related questions and issue resolution Assist with onboarding support related to payroll and timekeeping procedures Collaborate cross-functionally with HR and Finance on payroll strategy and operational improvements Maintain strict confidentiality when handling employee and compensation data Qualifications 5+ years of progressive payroll experience required, law firm experience required Strong understanding of California payroll regulations and multi-state payroll practices Experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification required Advanced proficiency in ADP Workforce Now or similar payroll systems Strong Excel and reporting skills Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities Strong communication skills and ability to work with all levels of an organization Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field preferred This position offers significant workplace flexibility, including remote work options, while maintaining periodic in-office collaboration.
