Pharmacy Administrative Specialist

At Houston Methodist, the Pharmacy Administrative Specialist position is an advanced pharmacist practitioner responsible for providing and coordinating pharmaceutical care to patients through medication use evaluations, drug policy development, and continuous quality management activities related to a specialty focus area designed to improve operational efficiency and patient safety. The position serves on one or more Medical Staff, Hospital, and/or Departmental Committees or Subcommittees, and acts as a role model for pharmacists, technicians, pharmacy students, and residents in integrating clinical and dispensing services within the Department. FLSA Status Exempt Qualifications Education Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below. Advanced degree (e.g., master’s degree or Pharm.D) preferred. Experience Successful completion of an ASHP‑accredited PGY1 and PGY2 residency training programs or an equivalent professional experience (three additional years of pharmacy experience per residency year; a pharmacy fellowship program with an applicable field may be considered equivalent to PGY2). Six years of pharmacist experience applicable to the specific work setting (e.g., hospital, specialty pharmacy). HM employees with five years of pharmacy experience and demonstrated leadership abilities may be considered. Licenses and Certifications PHRM – Pharmacist – State Licensure – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation_PSV or eligible for Texas Pharmacist License within 90 days. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 90 days. PPC – Pharmacist Preceptor Cert – State Licensure – Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation_PSV within 90 days. IV Certification – Intravenous certification (Various), preferred. Knowledge and Abilities Demonstrates required skills and competencies through ongoing assessment and performance evaluations. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to a level supporting safe patient and employee interactions. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family, and coworkers; consistent with customer service focus. Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills with all levels of the healthcare team; delivers excellent customer service. Knowledge of comprehensive pharmacy services: unit‑dose distribution, intravenous admixture, nutrition support, and target drug monitoring. Professional and technical competence in selection, evaluation, utilization, and distribution of drugs and drug information across all patient groups. Understanding of medical information systems design, development, and clinical integration. Ability to coordinate and supervise major pharmacy service areas. Research competence related to pharmacy practice. Independent work with sound judgment, managing challenging diagnostic procedures and patient care situations. Proficiency in pharmacy technology, MS Office, EMR software, advanced spreadsheet, and relational database use. Strong presentation and facilitation skills; highly organized and capable of multitasking. Analytical problem‑solving and decision‑making on technical and project issues. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Promotes a positive work environment, leads the team to dynamic performance, collaborates with health professionals for problem resolution and patient goals. Develops educational materials and programs for pharmacy staff and hospital personnel; serves as preceptor for pharmacy students and residents. Communicates regularly with pharmacy management regarding personnel, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance; implements protocols and objectives to optimize staff performance, teamwork, patient safety, and customer service. Service Essential Functions Manages daily workload fluctuations, recommends staffing and workload changes for optimal patient care, oversees staff activities, coordinates medication delivery, and serves as shift coordinator. Performs unit‑based pharmacist functions, exercising judgment in patient care: order verification, problem resolution, order processing, pharmacy consult responses, automatic stop orders, medication histories, patient counseling, and proactive drug therapy reviews. Serves as liaison between other departments and pharmacy to support pharmacy goals and quality initiatives. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Coordinates reporting in the specialty focus area; collects, collates, monitors, and reports statistical information including inventory analysis, quality management, and productivity data generated by the pharmacy information system. Works with other departments as an expert in the specialty focus area to improve patient care through quality management activities; identifies and resolves operational and clinical service issues related to technology; oversees quality assurance processes and applies Six Sigma, Lean, or other methodologies as appropriate. Reviews and updates policies and procedures assigned by the department director and/or manager. Finance Essential Functions Participates in developing the department’s annual budget for the specialty focus area; assists medical staff in selecting cost‑effective therapy regimens. Identifies and implements cost savings or revenue opportunities; minimizes waste and expired drug inventory; manages resources efficiently. Self‑motivated to prioritize tasks for self, pharmacy technicians, and support staff. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Assists pharmacy administration in planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring new pharmacy programs and services that address safety, finance, and operational initiatives. Contributes to interdepartmental activities and professional publications; gives presentations at local, state, and national meetings; conducts in‑services to pharmacy, medical, nursing, and nutrition staff; pursues continual development beyond baseline competencies. Leads technology assessment, selection, development, planning, and implementation of automated systems. Supplemental Requirements Wear scrubs and business professional attire; uniform not required. No on‑call requirement. May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area. Travel outside the Houston Metropolitan area not required. #J-18808-Ljbffr Houston Methodist
