Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington, DC (Rochambeau), has an immediate opening for a BUS MONITOR – Part-Time for the 2025-2026 school year.
Location: Bethesda, MD Reports to: Director of Transportation
Job Type: Part-time, split shift, hourly, non-exempt
Salary Information: $18.50 per hour.
Benefits: This position is eligible for Montgomery County Sick & Safe Leave and is not eligible for additional benefits or paid time off.

Position Summary
The Bus Monitor ensures the safe and orderly transportation of students to and from school. This role involves actively supervising students, managing behavior, assisting with safe boarding and exiting, and enforcing bus rules. The Bus Monitor maintains accurate records, conducts bus inspections, and acts promptly in emergencies to ensure student well-being. The Bus Monitor serves as a crucial support to the bus driver, fostering a positive and safe environment for all student passengers.
Representative Duties

- Build and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, and staff, contributing proactively as part of a highly collaborative administrative team.
- Demonstrate a high degree of cultural competency and a strong commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Maintain the strictest confidentiality on all sensitive matters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure student safety and well-being on and around the school bus during boarding, transit, and exiting. This includes actively monitoring student behavior, enforcing bus rules, and preventing the use of unsafe objects.
- Collaborate with the bus driver to manage student conduct, maintain a secure environment, and facilitate communication.
- Effectively manage student behavior, de-escalate unruly or disrespectful situations, and clearly explain bus rules to foster a positive and orderly atmosphere.
- Maintain accurate and timely records and documentation, including notes on disciplinary issues via iPad. Assist bus drivers with student record-keeping and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Perform thorough pre- and post-trip bus inspections (walk-throughs) to ensure no students are left behind and follow all "all clear" procedures.
- Facilitate the safe and orderly loading and unloading of students at bus stops and school. Ensure students are only released to authorized adults; remain with any unreceived students and follow departmental notification policies.
- In the event of an accident or emergency, ensure the safe evacuation of students and adult passengers and prepare the ridership list. Maintain current knowledge of and facilitate Emergency Evacuation procedures.
- Report any accidents, incidents, or traffic violations incurred by the Bus Driver to the supervisor or a member of management.
- Assist in maintaining the vehicle's interior in a clean and safe operating condition.
- Attend in-service meetings and training courses as assigned.
- Check school email daily.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED (or equivalent) desired
- Proficient in using technology, specifically iPads, for student registration and other tasks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a service-oriented approach.
- Ability to interact and communicate respectfully and effectively with students and staff members in a cooperative manner.
- Availability to work a split shift, typically starting at 6:00 AM and concluding between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM, with punctual and regular attendance.
- English communication proficiency required. Bilingual French/English desired.
- Ability to interact with children and successfully clear a background check.
Physical Demands: This position primarily operates in school, outdoor, and in-transit environments. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, cold, etc, and maintain physical mobility, including extended sitting, walking, standing, twisting, and stair climbing.
