Job Summary
CIR is looking for a University of California (UC) Deputy Regional Director located in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay area. This position reports to the UC Director.
The UC Deputy Director will implement the UC internal organizing strategic plan in the UC Northern California chapters. The UC internal organizing strategic plan consists of two key components to build power at the local worksites: representation work and issue-based campaign work. Under representation work, you will oversee contract implementation and enforcement that centers on shifting power dynamics at the worksite. Under issue based campaign work, you will provide guidance on local direct action campaigns that are focused on building towards the next round of contract negotiations. You will consult and collaborate with various departments such as strategic campaigns, legal, public affairs teams, and communications. You will supervise Contract Organizers.
What You’ll Do
- Representation work: Ensure collective bargaining agreements are implemented and enforced at UC Chapters by strategizing with Organizers in the execution and resolution of issues, and by collaborating with the Director of Strategic Campaigns and the Legal Team.
- Provide guidance on individual and group grievances.
- Provide guidance through meet and confers, and participate as necessary.
- Provide guidance through decision and effects bargaining, and staff bargaining sessions as necessary.
- Lead statewide and local direct action campaigns that are centered on building union-power using tactics that are creative, relevant and which escalate in pressure as appropriate.
- Provide support for contract campaigns and collective bargaining as needed
- Supervise Organizers
- Review weekly work with the Organizers
- Co-create staff development plans
- Coach and mentor direct reports
- Continuously provide feedback in a timely manner
- Conduct regular evaluations
- Approve expenses, time off, and other administrative functions for the staff
- Participate in the recruitment of staff for the UC team
- Provide written communications and reports to members, union leaders, Executive Committee and CIR staff as needed
- Assist in new organizing and political campaigns as needed
- Track and maintain accurate records and databases
What Makes a Great Candidate
- Eight years or more of organizing experience in the labor movement required.
- At least two years’ of experience leading or managing/supervising staff preferred.
- Must be able to manage with the values of the labor movement and be willing to constantly improve as a manager.
- Healthcare organizing experience in both public and private sectors is preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with community allies, electeds and hospital administrators to support contract organizing campaigns.
- Ability to quickly learn resident life/training, hospital operations and finance, and relevant economic and political issues.
- Familiarity with labor law (in local jurisdictions), libel/free speech laws, collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, mediation and arbitration processes.
- Strong planning and time management skills, ability to prioritize and develop work plans independently with minimal supervision including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks.
- Possesses strong listening, interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to work with a diverse group of people and is thoughtful about advancing equitable outcomes on staff and within the field.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable while building respect, trust and a positive work environment.
- Inclusive leader who encourages initiative and innovation, and is able to effectively involve the team in planning and decision-making.
- Appropriately manages conflict, disagreements and adversarial situations among staff.
- Ability to critically evaluate one’s own performance and incorporate feedback into improving performance.
- Ability to support, model and coach staff through honest, clear and timely feedback; able to facilitate the learning of others, both formally and informally.
- Technologically proficient with Google products such as Gmail and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drive); willingness to learn new technology to make hybrid organizing work effective.
- Some travel is required.
- Ability to work long hours.
- Must be fully vaccinated for Covid in accordance with CDC guidelines, subject to any laws of the state in which the applicant resides.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
CIR Offers
This is a full-time, salaried, overtime-exempt position. The salary for this position is $137,385.
