CNC Machinist

CNC Machinist / CNC Lathe and Mill Operator

This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC lathes and mills in a climate-controlled manufacturing environment. You will work from engineering documentation, ensure parts meet quality standards through inspection, and perform routine maintenance on machines. Depending on experience level, you will progress from basic operation to full process development, including programming and tooling design.

Responsibilities

• Set up, operate, and maintain CNC lathe and/or mill machines in a production environment.
• Work from bills of material (BOM) and bills of operations (BOO) to produce components according to specifications.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and related documentation to determine machining requirements.
• Interpret and identify the correct bill of material for each job and ensure all required components and materials are available.
• Adhere to established guidelines, procedures, and work instructions to maintain consistent quality and safety.
• Perform inspection of workpieces using gauge equipment and other measuring tools to verify dimensional accuracy.
• Conduct routine maintenance on machine tools to ensure proper operation and minimize downtime.
• Use manual equipment, such as drill presses and other shop tools, to perform necessary secondary or supporting operations.
• Apply basic understanding of CNC machine language and codes to run and adjust programs as needed.
• At Level 2, maintain and manage tooling, including selection, setup, and basic repair.
• At Level 2, work with various types of raw materials and understand how material characteristics affect machining processes.
• Identify problems related to tooling, machine function, and raw materials, and take corrective action or escalate as appropriate.
• Perform machine setups from process instructions, including work holding, tool offsets, and program loading.
• Inspect and validate first-piece parts to confirm process accuracy before running production quantities.
• Adjust or modify CNC programming within defined parameters to improve quality or efficiency.
• At Level 3, develop and implement CNC machining processes, including CNC programming, process tooling, work holding solutions, process documentation, and first article validation.
• Achieve full competency in operating lathes, mills, and multi-axis CNC machines.
• Incorporate automation principles and techniques in conjunction with machining processes where applicable.
• Collaborate with supervisors and team members to support continuous improvement and complete other assigned functions and responsibilities.

Essential Skills

• 1+ years of CNC machining experience.
• Basic understanding of CNC machine language and codes.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
• Ability to interpret and identify the correct bill of material (BOM) for each job.
• Capability to work from a bill of material (BOM) and bill of operations (BOO).
• Experience performing inspection of workpieces using gauge equipment and other measuring tools.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance on machine tools.
• Experience performing necessary duties using manual equipment such as drill presses and other shop tools.
• Familiarity with CNC lathes and mills and general machining operations.
• Ability to adhere to established guidelines, procedures, and work instructions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Tooling knowledge and the ability to perform tooling maintenance.
• Knowledge of various types of raw materials and how they affect machining processes.
• Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems related to tooling, machine function, and raw materials.
• Capability to perform full machine setup from process instructions, including work holding and tool offsets.
• Experience inspecting and validating first-piece parts prior to production runs.
• Ability to adjust or modify CNC programs as needed to improve quality or efficiency.
• Familiarity with principles and techniques associated with CNC machining and process development.
• Experience developing and implementing CNC machining processes, including programming, process tooling, work holding, process documentation, and first article validation.
• Full competency in operating lathe, mill, and multi-axis CNC machines.
• Understanding of automation concepts as they apply to machining operations.
• Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD/CAM tools for programming or process support.
• Machine operation and machine setup in a manufacturing environment.

Work Environment

The role is based in a climate-controlled manufacturing facility within a machining department. You will work primarily with CNC lathes, mills, and related machining equipment, including drill presses and other manual machines. The environment is structured and process-driven, with a focus on quality and safety. Available shifts include a first shift from 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Friday, and a second shift from 4:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The schedule offers predictable hours and a steady workload in a professional production setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lenexa, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $32.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
