Vision & Role Overview

At The Hills, our vision for 2026 is hope and a future for the next generation. The Next Gen Director is a passionate, relational leader devoted to reaching young people with the gospel, building authentic relationships, and making disciples at every stage of growth.

This role oversees three primary ministries: Hills Kids, Hills Youth, and Hills Young Adults. The Next Gen Director may directly lead one specific environment while overseeing ministry leaders across the others, with a core emphasis on recruiting, equipping, and multiplying leaders.

Ministry Snapshots

Hills Kids (Birth–5th Grade): Operates on Sunday mornings in a mobile setup environment, ministering to 15–30 children weekly. Backed by a dedicated team of 30+ volunteers, rotating team captains, and dedicated teachers, volunteers typically rotate 1–3 times per month.

Hills Youth (6th–12th Grade): Meets Wednesday evenings on a local charter school campus, reaching 25–40 students weekly. Led alongside a strong leadership team of 12 students, parents, and young adults engaging in games, worship, biblical teaching, and small groups.

Hills Young Adults: Meets bi-weekly on Thursday evenings in a home setting, ministering to 12–20 young adults through worship, teaching, and community. The strategic focus for this ministry is expanding outreach to local college campuses (Cal State San Marcos, Palomar College, and MiraCosta College).

Key Responsibilities & Core Competencies

Leadership Multiplication & Recruiting: Actively recruit, train, and mentor future leaders and volunteers. Create a culture of inviting others to participate in what God is doing.

Biblical Teaching & Discipleship: Serve as a gifted, engaging Bible teacher who can connect with kids, students, young adults, and parents alike. Train and coach emerging teachers while grounding all curriculum in biblical theology and relational discipleship.

Relational Ministry: Build meaningful connections with Next Gen families, volunteers, and the broader North County community.

Mobile Ministry Operations: Oversee Sunday setup, teardown, and weekly ministry execution across setup-and-strike environments.

Position Requirements

Church Experience: A proven track record of faithful service in a local church setting (prior vocational church staff experience is welcome, but not required).

Culture & Theological Alignment: Full alignment with The Hills' mission, vision, values, theological convictions, and cultural standards as outlined in our Culture Guide.

Local Presence: Belief in incarnational ministry requires living within 20 minutes of San Marcos, CA. (Note: We recognize North County is a high cost-of-living area and are committed to helping candidate families find viable housing solutions).

Reliable Transportation: Ability to travel throughout North County for community meetings, leader check-ins, and ministry needs.

Family Alignment: Full support from immediate family, with an expectation that the director's household actively participates in the life of The Hills Community Church (attending, serving, giving, and building relationships).

Weekly Schedule & Time Commitments

Sunday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Setup, Service, Hills Kids, and Teardown)

Monday: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM (Staff Meeting)

Tuesday – Thursday: Flexible co-working hours, work-from-home time, and community meetings with leaders and Next Gen families.

Friday & Saturday: Off (occasional Saturday commitments for special events, roughly 2–3 times per year).

Compensation, Benefits & Rest

Base Salary & Support Raising

• Base Salary: $50,000

• Fundraising Potential: Opportunity to significantly increase total compensation through support raising. All staff members at The Hills are experienced in support raising, and our Lead Pastor provides direct coaching and mentorship for candidates who choose to pursue this pathway.

Sabbath & Rest

• Guaranteed Days Off: You will always receive two full days off per week. If a special event requires work on a typical day off, an alternative day off will be provided.

• Sabbath Sundays: The entire staff team receives full rest on Memorial Day Weekend, Labor Day Weekend, and the Sunday following Christmas.

Holidays & Generous Paid Time Off

• Holidays: Christmas Eve and Easter are core ministry days. Standard staff holidays include Thanksgiving (2 days), 4th of July, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, and Juneteenth.
