About the Position

Experience in admissions/discharges, fast pace. Basic medical-surgical skills. Experience in observation unit (preferred). Description: This facility is a Level III Trauma Center and has a Level III NICU. It holds Magnet Designation and is a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The facility has a total of 933 beds and 28 beds specifically dedicated to the unit. The patient population includes those with chest pain, post cath lab situations, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, suspected CVAs, and TIAs, post interventional radiology procedures, cellulitis, and acute kidney injury. Surgical patients are rarely encountered. The average patient stay is approximately 36 hours. Patients are tested for COVID-19 prior to admission. Staff will admit or discharge 2-3 patients daily. Patient ratios are as follows: Day Shift: 1 nurse to 4-5 patients. Night Shift: 1 nurse to 6-8 patients. On Day Shift, there is 1 tech for every 5 patients. On Night Shift, techs have a ratio of 1 to 9 patients. Support on the unit includes: A charge nurse who takes a lighter patient assignment. A unit secretary available 24/7. A hospitalist available around the clock. Respiratory therapy available 24/7. Centralized telemetry monitoring with technicians on duty 24/7. Phlebotomy assistance for peripheral blood draws. Charting system and equipment include EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis, and GE monitors. Floating may occur to medical-surgical units and emergency departments, with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio. Travelers will have priority for floating. Weekend rotation is every other weekend. The schedule is created 6 weeks in advance and will be provided 2 weeks before the start of the schedule. Requests for time off can be approved for up to 7 days with prior notice. There is no on-call requirement. The organization adheres to a fatigue policy where all staff cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or more than 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts. Holiday expectations include working one holiday per season, specifically during Christmas Eve/Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day. Scrub color can vary, though camo and denim are not permitted. Documentation of pain levels must be recorded before and after administering pain medications. It is important to ensure that the pain score aligns with the medication order.
