Medical Assistant (MA)

Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) supports the delivery of health care services within the correctional facility by assisting licensed
providers and nursing staff with routine clinical and administrative duties. The MA is responsible for obtaining and documenting vital signs, preparing patients for evaluation, stocking exam rooms and clinical supply areas, maintaining accurate and timely documentation, and supporting efficient clinic operations in accordance with facility policy, NCCHC standards, and applicable New Mexico scope of practice requirements. This position does not include medication passing or independent clinical judgment outside the MA role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist providers and licensed nursing staff during sick call, chronic care clinics, intake support, and other clinical encounters.
• Obtain, document, and report vital signs according to facility protocol.
• Prepare patients and exam areas for evaluation, including room setup, supply gathering, and infection control practices.
• Stock and maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, and clinical supplies; clean and organize equipment and work areas.
• Support routine specimen collection, point-of-care tasks, scheduling, forms, and continuity-of-care activities within approved scope.
• Document patient care activities and promptly report abnormal findings, patient concerns, or changes in condition to the supervising nurse or provider.
• Maintain safety, security awareness, professional boundaries, and confidentiality in the correctional setting.
• Participate in quality improvement activities, emergency drills, training, and other required compliance activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned consistent with training, facility policy, and applicable scope of practice.
• May not independently assess, triage, diagnose, or pass medications unless separately authorized by licensure, credentialing, and facility policy.

Qualifications
• Completion of a Medical Assistant training program or equivalent relevant clinical training and experience.
• Current CPR/BLS certification required.
• Correctional, primary care, urgent care, or related clinical experience preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with providers, nurses, custody staff, and patients in a secure environment.
• Knowledge of basic clinical procedures, documentation, infection control, and patient confidentiality preferred.
