Junior Level Chemist

The position is for a junior level chemist in the IDOH Chemistry Laboratories. The chemist will prepare and analyze samples for antibiotics in wastewater. Their work is part of a wastewater epidemiology project. The chemist will also analyze a range of other contaminants including opioids, radionuclides, metals, and pesticides. Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in chemical or physical science and minimum of 2 years of experience as an analytical chemist. Duties and responsibilities include performing complex chemical analysis in compliance with EPA, FDA, or CLIA requirements, maintaining assigned instrumentation, preparing technical reports, and training others in the lab. The job requires technical knowledge of laboratory equipment such as LC/MS/MS, LC/QTOF and GC/MS/MS, and familiarity with Sciex equipment is preferred. The candidate should have broad knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP) and good automated laboratory practices (GALP). The job requires knowledge of principles and practices of analytical, organic and inorganic chemistry. The chemist should have practical knowledge of laboratory safety and biosafety and extensive knowledge of appropriate state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies. The chemist is expected to design analytical techniques and develop new methods of analysis. The chemist will work under minimal supervision and may be required to testify in judicial proceedings as an expert witness. The chemist will work in a laboratory environment and must follow appropriate safety precautions as hazards include compressed gasses, flammable materials and chemicals which may be poisons or carcinogens/teratogens. Biohazards are also present.
