Job Title: Welder Job Description This role involves performing high-quality welding using GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (stick) processes in a manufacturing environment. You will read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, set up and operate welding equipment, and ensure all welds meet specified standards and quality requirements. You will contribute to safe, efficient production by inspecting parts, maintaining equipment, and following established safety and housekeeping practices. Responsibilities Perform welding using GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (stick) processes in accordance with blueprint and technical drawing specifications. Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine welding requirements, dimensions, and tolerances. Inspect parts and weld components to ensure they meet blueprint specifications and quality standards. Obtain specified electrodes and insert them into portable holders, or thread consumable electrode wire through portable welding guns as required. Connect cables from welding units and set amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse according to instructions from Welding Engineers or Welding Technicians. Strike and maintain a stable arc to generate heat, melt, and deposit metal from the electrode to the workpiece, ensuring proper fusion and joint quality. Manually guide the electrode or welding gun along the weld line, maintaining consistent arc length and travel speed to achieve the required depth of fusion and weld bead. Monitor the weld by observing metal color, listening to weld sound, and watching the size of the molten puddle to ensure proper weld quality. Perform welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions as required by the job. Examine completed welds for bead size, appearance, and adherence to specifications, and make adjustments as needed. Apply filler rod manually when required to supply additional weld metal and achieve proper joint strength. Clean or degrease weld joints and workpieces prior to welding to ensure proper weld integrity. Repair broken or cracked parts by grooving, scarfing, or otherwise preparing surfaces for welding and restoration. Remove excess weld, slag, and irregularities from workpieces using hand tools, torches, or heating equipment. Position, align, and clamp workpieces together, or assemble them in jigs or fixtures to ensure accurate fit-up before welding. Tack weld assemblies to hold components in place prior to completing full welds. Operate cutting torches and carbon arc equipment to cut, shape, or prepare metal components as needed. Change welding wire and welding gases and perform general maintenance on welding units to keep equipment in good working order. Operate electric hoists to safely load, move, and position materials and products. Perform all work in a safety-conscious manner, recognize potential hazards, and take appropriate countermeasures to protect yourself and others. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in alignment with established housekeeping policies. Essential Skills 1-3 years of experience performing MIG and stick welding in a production or similar environment. Proficiency in GMAW (MIG) and SMAW (stick) welding processes. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and manufacturing drawings. Ability to inspect welds and components against blueprint specifications and quality standards. Basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Ability to operate cutting torches and carbon arc equipment. Ability to set up and adjust welding equipment, including electrodes, wire feed, and welding parameters. Capability to weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. Strong attention to detail and ability to evaluate weld quality by visual and auditory cues. Commitment to working safely and following established safety procedures and guidelines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Welding certification from AWS and ASME is preferred. Ability to pass AWS and ASME certification tests if not currently certified. Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment is preferred. Experience using electric hoists to move materials and products. Familiarity with general maintenance of welding units, including changing welding wire and gases. Comfort working with chemicals in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheets. Why Work Here? Work Environment The standard work schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with additional work on Friday as needed. You will wear safety glasses and hearing protection when in production zones and may work around chemicals that are documented and managed according to Material Safety Data Sheets. The role involves working around welding equipment, cutting torches, carbon arc tools, and electric hoists, with an emphasis on maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area in line with established housekeeping policies. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hampton, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr.
