Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Joint Pain

Location: Lancaster, Bakersfield and Fresno CA

Job Type: Full-Time

Setting: Outpatient / On-Site

We are seeking an experienced Orthopedic Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join a growing outpatient practice focused on chronic joint pain and minimally invasive treatment options.

This position is ideal for a PA with experience in orthopedics, sports medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, or pain management who is interested in working in an innovative, non-surgical environment.

You will evaluate patients with chronic knee, hip, shoulder, and other joint pain, review imaging and treatment history, provide patient education, and work closely with physicians to determine appropriate treatment pathways.

The practice offers minimally invasive treatment options, including Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) and Targeted Arterial Micro-Embolization (TAME), for appropriately selected patients.

Responsibilities

•Perform comprehensive orthopedic and musculoskeletal evaluations.

•Evaluate patients with knee, hip, shoulder, and other joint pain.

•Review X-rays, MRI reports, medical records, injections, physical therapy, medications, and previous treatments.

•Assess pain, mobility, functional limitations, and patient goals.

•Identify appropriate candidates for further evaluation for minimally invasive procedures.

•Educate patients about treatment options, expectations, risks, benefits, and alternatives.

•Conduct pre-procedure and follow-up visits.

•Monitor pain relief, mobility, functional improvement, and patient outcomes.

•Coordinate care with physicians, interventional staff, imaging teams, physical therapists, and referring providers.

•Recognize red flags or conditions requiring referral to another specialty.

•Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EMR.

•Assist with prior authorization and clinical documentation when needed.

•Participate in case reviews and development of the joint pain program.

Patient Population

Patients may include individuals with:

•Chronic knee pain

•Knee osteoarthritis

•Hip or shoulder pain

•Chronic joint inflammation

•Tendinopathy

•Sports-related or overuse injuries

•Persistent pain despite conservative treatment

•Failed physical therapy, injections, medications, bracing, or other treatments

•Patients seeking alternatives to or hoping to delay joint replacement

•Patients who are not ideal candidates for traditional surgery

Qualifications

Required:

•Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

•Current PA-C certification.

•Active California PA license or eligibility for California licensure.

•DEA registration or ability to obtain.

•Current BLS certification.

•2+ years of experience in orthopedics, sports medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, pain management, or a related specialty.

•Strong orthopedic examination and clinical assessment skills.

•Experience evaluating patients with knee, hip, shoulder, or chronic joint pain.

Preferred:

•5+ years of orthopedic or musculoskeletal experience.

•Outpatient orthopedic or sports medicine experience.

•Experience with knee osteoarthritis and conservative treatment.

•Experience reviewing orthopedic imaging.

•Experience with joint injections or other musculoskeletal procedures.

•Experience with joint preservation or non-surgical treatment options.

•Pain management experience.

•Familiarity with vascular/interventional procedures.

•Experience with eClinicalWorks or a similar EMR.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is a clinically strong, patient-focused PA who can confidently evaluate musculoskeletal conditions and communicate treatment options clearly.

You should be comfortable working with patients who have chronic pain and may be looking for alternatives to traditional surgery. Strong communication, clinical judgment, documentation skills, and the ability to collaborate with physicians are important for success in this role.

Previous GAE or TAME experience is not required. Training and familiarity with the treatment pathway can be developed on the job.
