The Payroll Specialist reports to the Director of Human Resources and provides payroll and compliance services to the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Payroll services include payroll processing, position management, and state and federal wage law compliance.MINISTERIAL CHARACTER:The Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church (The Diocese) entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.Each position employed in the Diocese of Corpus Christi helps to extend the ministry of the Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The list below reflects the general details considered necessary to describe the primary functions of the job identified and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the job.As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both your professional and personal lifeAct as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic ChurchContinuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directedReview and process bi-weekly and monthly payroll ensuring accuracy with wage rates, benefits deductions, federal income tax withholding, FLSA and DOL statusEvaluate and identify areas of improvement within the payroll processAdhere to legal and ethical standards pertaining to personnel mattersWork with cross-departmental stakeholders to ensure payroll services such as the diocesan retirement plan, leave accounting, and benefits are delivered accurately and according to policy and proceduresFollow Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Labor, and Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines, and ensure all government documents such as Form W-2 are accurate and in compliance with respective agency guidelinesPerform other duties assignedMENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Ability to maintain composure under duressOccasional local travelProlonged use of computer with repetitive hand motionsLifting of 10 pounds or moreQualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting or related field; experience in similar position will count on a year-for-year basisMinimum of three years' experience with an accounting software package including payroll processingBasic understanding of finance and accounting principles including general ledgerBasic knowledge of state and federal employment and payroll guidelinesREQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Ability to perform research on state and federal regulations pertaining to compensation and labor guidelinesStrong mathematics skillsProficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, WordAbility to operate general office equipment and computer hardware including 10-key by touchMust have extensive experience with computerized accounting systemSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with attention to customer serviceStrong organization skills and attention to detailAbility to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple projects and prioritize tasksStrong critical thinking and problem-solving skillsAbility to work independently and collaboratively with a teamAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and clientsAbility to maintain confidentiality and use discretionProficiency with computer hardware and basic office softwareAbility to handle and defuse difficult situationsADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Must submit to employment required screenings including criminal background, MVR and drug screening.Must obtain certification in Safe Environment training provided by the Office of Safe Environment and Child & Family Resources.Position requires adherence to diocesan policies and procedures, as well as exceptional collegiality and ability to work in a team environmentORGANIZATION IMPROVEMENT AND MORALE:Demonstrates a professional attitude as a member of diocesan staffMaintains confidentiality in matters of assigned department and the dioceseServes as a representative of the diocese displaying courtesy, tact, positivity, and discretion in all interactions with colleagues and community servedCarries out commitments made to diocesan colleagues and community servedEmploys professional ethics in relationships with diocesan colleagues and community servedPositively contributes to the overall mission and values of the department to promote a positive organizational culture
