Crossing Guard 2026‑2027 (260000J6) Job Overview The Crossing Guard provides assistance to children and other pedestrians in crossing specified streets along school routes and performs related work as required. The incumbent is assigned to locations near schools or along adjacent streets to protect children from traffic when crossing and to present a safety enforcement presence to passing motorists. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safety Assemble children and other pedestrians behind curb lines, awaiting traffic gaps or signal changes Interrupt traffic and escort pedestrians into the street allowing them to cross safely Instruct children in proper procedures for safe street crossing Direct traffic movement and warn of hazards, using signs and hand signals Stop traffic as necessary Communication Report students who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to appropriate school officials Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the above essential duties satisfactorily. High School Diploma or GED preferred Demonstrate the willingness, sensitivity and maturity to work effectively with children Ability to cope with severe weather, temperature extremes and the stamina to stand/walk for at least one hour or more Ability to communicate and speak effectively to emergency personnel Ability to give clear and concise instructions to pedestrians and motorists Must be able to speak and understand English language Must be dependable and responsible Must have reliable transportation Physical Requirements / Working Conditions The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in classrooms, offices, work stations and meeting rooms. The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress. Additional Information Maintain emotional control under stress. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions and requires sufficient physical strength, agility and dexterity to perform all essential tasks. Duties require walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, standing, sitting, lifting and carrying light objects. Work exposes employee to dangerous, hazardous, and potentially life‑threatening situations.
