This Occupational Therapist opportunity is based in Petersburg, Virginia, a historic city just south of Richmond that offers a welcoming community feel, affordable cost of living, and easy access to the cultural and outdoor amenities of Central Virginia. Petersburg blends well-preserved Civil War-era sites, a growing arts and dining scene, and proximity to the James and Appomattox rivers, making it ideal for weekend exploration, day trips to Richmond, or quick drives to the mountains or the coast. The position is in a modern acute care hospital environment that serves as a key regional resource for emergency and tertiary care. The facility supports Level III Trauma and Stroke Center services and cares for a diverse, medically complex patient population. Occupational Therapists here gain experience with a wide range of diagnoses and acuity levels, including orthopedic post-operative patients, ICU-level patients, cardio-pulmonary conditions, and general med/surg cases. This setting offers excellent clinical exposure and the chance to build or deepen acute care and inpatient rehab skills. The role is full-time with a schedule of 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., any day Sunday through Saturday, with a requirement of at least two weekend days per month. The caseload primarily includes adults and geriatrics, with occasional adolescents, and spans trauma, stroke, orthopedic, surgical, medical, and cardio-pulmonary conditions. You can expect to perform comprehensive OT evaluations, develop and implement individualized treatment plans, focus on functional mobility and ADL retraining, address cognitive and perceptual needs, and take an active role in discharge planning to ensure safe transitions of care. Therapists work closely with an interdisciplinary team including physical therapy, speech therapy, nursing, physicians, case management, and respiratory therapy. The hospital emphasizes collaborative care, evidence-based practice, and effective communication among disciplines to support quality outcomes and patient satisfaction. You will regularly participate in team rounds, coordinate with nursing and medical staff on care goals, and provide ongoing patient and family education. A typical day may include 30–45 minute evaluation and treatment sessions across multiple units, with a dynamic mix of ICU, step-down, and med/surg patients. Caseload volume is aligned with typical acute care expectations and supported by therapy leadership focused on safe, efficient workflows and appropriate prioritization of patients, including stroke alerts and higher-acuity cases. This position offers a strong clinical growth environment, especially for therapists interested in advancing skills in neuro, trauma, and complex medical rehabilitation. The hospital’s role as a trauma and stroke care provider allows you to contribute meaningfully to patient recovery across the continuum of care, from early mobilization and intensive functional retraining to transition planning for inpatient rehab, SNF, or home services.
