Under supervision, with some latitude for independent judgment, the selected candidate will perform research, analysis, and planning activities supporting the operation and improvement of bus stops and other citywide transportation programs. The City Planner will organize and conduct transportation planning studies; identify planning and operational issues; and analyze traffic, safety, accessibility, land use, and community conditions. Responsibilities will include conducting field investigations and surveys to evaluate bus stop locations, pedestrian and vehicular circulation, visibility, access, traffic volumes, crash patterns, and other roadway conditions. The selected candidate will review transportation and traffic proposals for compliance with applicable governmental policies, regulations, standards, and specifications. The position will define information needs and sources; collect, organize, and analyze transportation-related data; maintain project records and databases; and prepare reports, diagrams, drawings, maps, sketches, and other graphics documenting field conditions and study findings. The City Planner may assist in evaluating proposed changes involving bus stop locations, signage, pavement markings, loading zones, traffic signals, traffic circulation, and other traffic control measures. Additional responsibilities will include developing and carrying out planning projects and work programs, maintaining project schedules, preparing recommendations, and coordinating activities with agency staff, community groups, transportation providers, consultants, and other stakeholders. The selected candidate may also assist in preparing work orders and monitoring the installation, modification, or removal of bus stop signs and related traffic control devices to ensure that work is completed in accordance with approved plans and established standards. The candidate will be expected to lead collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development, develop a strong team, and to effectively communicate through verbal and written forms with all stakeholders. This is an opportunity to work with a team dedicated to improving safety, accessibility and mobility throughout New York City.
