Pharmacy Technician

General Pharmacy Technician duties may include:
- Gather prescription insurance coverage information
- Perform prescription order entry and fulfillment
- Perform basic metric conversions and calculations
- Prepare sterile and non-sterile compounds
- Greet patients and answer phones
- Provide bedside delivery of discharge prescriptions
- Assist with the resolution of medication access barriers
- Collaborate with nursing, social work, providers, pharmacists, and others to optimize patient care
- Assist with problem solving and process improvements within the pharmacy
- Assist with the training and oversight of other staff and learners (pharmacy students, residents and interns)
- Must exhibit good communication skills in dealing with patients and/or families, who may have compromised health or language barriers and with other members of the health care team. Be adaptable to diverse patient care environments
- Exhibit strong attention to detail, accuracy and the ability to work independently
- Other duties and projects as assigned by supervisor to facilitate safe and efficient patient care
Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity: lifting, pulling, bending, manual dexterity movements. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, prioritize with accuracy and dependability: Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English.
Pharmacy Technician Associate:
- Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Current license that meets the State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician licensing requirements.
- A temporary pharmacy technician license (valid for 1 year and is non-renewable) or a full pharmacy technician licesne upon hire.
- A full pharmacy technician license before the temporary license expires.
- This position requires primary source verification.
- Proficient communication, computer and basic mathematic skills are necessary.
- Must be able to prioritize with accuracy and dependability.
Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program.
Basic algebra including performing pharmacy calculations.
Demonstrated record of excellence with direct patient interaction, collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, insurance claim adjudication, prior authorization facilitation, and prescription processing in a community pharmacy setting.

The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.
Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
This is a full-time position. Hours depend on the community pharmacy operational hours. Shifts start as early as 600am and end as late as 600pm. Weekends also must be worked on a rotational basis. Rotation among work locations is required based on operational needs. The locations for which employee rotate through include Brighton Center for Specialty Care, East Ann Arbor Health Center, Taubman Center, Rogel Cancer Center, and Kellogg Eye Center.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
