Integrated Pest Management Research Technician

University Alaska-Fairbanks

The University of Alaska Fairbanks, Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Extension performs research and educational outreach on a variety of topics related to agricultural food production with the goal of increasing food security in Alaska. This position works on a 2 year project to understand root maggot populations in agricultural production settings using cover crops to modify habitat for root maggots and their predators. The project also develops control strategies for root maggots in susceptible cropping systems using nematodes as biocontrol agents and other techniques. Results from studies are presented to agricultural producers, gardeners, and the scientific community. The position works with a team of scientists that work on a variety of integrated pest management topics in agricultural and wildland settings in Alaska.

The successful applicant should have excellent communication, and organization skills to work in a fast paced environment coordinating with many individuals on data collection, use of machinery, ordering supplies, and ensuring tasks are carried out correctly and efficiently. While no supervisory of staff is required, this position should be able to explain plot set up, treatment, and data collection protocols to other staff and possibly volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years college coursework in fields relevant to the research (e.g. agricultural sciences, biology, entomology or similar) and two years experience in a field relevant to the research or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Valid Drivers license or the ability to obtain one and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.

Pesticide certification in Demonstration and Research (can get on the job).

Understanding of principles of integrated pest management.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Troth Yeddha' campus in Fairbanks Alaska. This is a part-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and  full employee benefits package . UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the  UA Staff Salary Schedule , Grade 77, based on education and experience.
