Overview Local Law 97 (LL97) sets annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions limits for buildings 25,000 square feet and greater beginning in 2025. A building’s GHG limits are a function of the building space use type(s) coupled with corresponding square footage. LL97 requires annual filing regardless of whether a building is above or below its GHG limits, for both initial reporting periods, 2024-2029 and 2030-2034. New York City enacted Local Law 97 to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The law requires buildings over 25,000 square feet to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2050. LL97 is one of the most ambitious climate laws in the country and requires the management and coordination of an expert. If your property is affected by Local Law 97, Energo can help. The reporting deadline for the LL97 2025 reporting year is May 1, 2025. Building owners that need more time can file an LL97 extension request until August 29, 2025 which would extend the reporting deadline to December 31, 2025. For example, a 100,000 sq. ft. multifamily building emitting 800 metric tons of carbon would be 145 metric tons over its 2024-2029 targets and pay a fine of $38,860.
