Electrical Project Engineer - Substation Location: Burlington, MA, US; Irvine, CA, US; Walnut Creek, CA, US Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies Opportunity Type: Staff Project Only Hire: No Overview As an Electrical Project Engineer you will manage electrical substation projects from design through procurement and construction, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across all project phases. Key Responsibilities Function as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead providing project coordination, guidance, and expertise. Support substation projects up to 765kV, including detailed design and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC). Develop protection and control design deliverables: protective relays, panel arrangements, single‑line and three‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring, and equipment wiring. Develop physical design deliverables: yard layout plans, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems. Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages. Guide and mentor junior team members. Prepare equipment specifications and Bills of Materials for procurement and construction. Communicate and coordinate activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors and other stakeholders. Present proposals, designs and project activities. Travel to client and vendor offices and project sites as required. Prepare and manage design budgets and schedules. Support business development or pursuit activities. Develop and provide guidance on design standards, codes, and best practices. Coordinate with internal and external teams on complex projects, managing schedules, budgets, and quality. Preferred Qualifications Experience with high‑voltage substation design (physical and/or protection & controls). Project lead and technical specialist experience overseeing utility substation projects. QA/QC review experience. Experience coordinating with clients, multidisciplinary leads, and project managers. Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and the Microsoft Office Suite. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 5 years related work experience. Capability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements.
