Chief, Division of Hand Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics (MD) The chief of the Division of Hand Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division, including planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, research, and clinical programs. The chief will have financial authority over the division's budget and extramural/ philanthropic funding, and will oversee recruitment, retention, and professional development of division faculty. This position reports directly to the chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and has a matrix reporting relationship to the CEOs of Banner – University Medical Group and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix for all clinical activities conducted at B‑UMCP. The chief will maintain a robust clinical practice focused on hand surgery, foster excellence in patient care, education, research, faculty development, and ambulatory growth aligned with the missions of the University of Arizona and Banner Health. Responsibilities Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Division of Hand Surgery, ensuring alignment with departmental, college, and Banner Health priorities. Lead divisional efforts in quality, safety, patient outcomes, and clinical standardization, including out‑patient based surgery and value‑based care initiatives. Partner with departmental and BUMG leadership on ambulatory growth strategies, access, clinic efficiency, and care model optimization. Support faculty recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and professional development within the Division. Oversee divisional performance metrics, including volume, quality outcomes, patient experience, and financial stewardship. Collaborate with hospital and health system leaders on service line development, technology adoption, and program expansion. Participate in departmental and institutional leadership committees as appropriate. Maintain an active adult hand and upper extremity surgery program within Banner – University Medical Group. Provide high‑quality patient care in ambulatory clinic settings, surgical services, and inpatient care at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. Actively participate in multidisciplinary care teams, focusing on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), peri‑operative optimization, and value‑based care. Serve as a referral resource for complex hand and upper extremity cases within the Banner system. Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows in orthopedic surgery and related programs. Contribute to curriculum development and educational innovation within the Department of Orthopaedics. Support scholarly activity, including clinical research, outcomes research, or educational scholarship, consistent with academic rank and interests. Promote a culture of inquiry, professionalism, and continuous improvement. Conduct research and other scholarly work as applicable. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications MD or equivalent degree from an accredited institution. Eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher. Board certified in hand and upper extremity surgery. Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona. Eligible for medical staff membership at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. Preferred Qualifications Track record of publishing research findings in hand and upper extremity surgery. Greater than 10 years of progressively complex administrative experience in an academic medical center setting. Demonstrated leadership experience supervising orthopaedic faculty and staff. Outstanding interpersonal communication and professionalism skills.
