Rail Track & Row Maintainer

Job Overview The Rail Track & ROW Maintainer will perform journey-level trades work to troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, repair, weld, upgrade and conduct comprehensive preventive maintenance on track, special track work, track switches, aerial and tunnel structures, retaining walls, fencing, and associated equipment and components. The role requires effective communication, problem solving, safety culture, and high standards of customer service. Responsibilities Inspect, diagnose, repair, maintain, and replace running rails, restraining rails, fasteners, switch components, crossings, and all other track-maintenance components. Operate service vehicles, small cranes and other vehicles used in track maintenance and inspection. Use rail saws, rail drills, portable ballast tampers and other specialized tools for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks. Set up work‑zone traffic control areas and flag tracks to provide safe rail work zones. Operate switch machines manually in revenue and non‑revenue conditions. Prioritize emergency maintenance tasks when on‑site supervision is not present. Record and document maintenance and diagnostic data. Assist other trades as necessary and respond to emergency calls. Perform snow and ice removal. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications At least one year of experience working with hand and powered tools or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Ability to differentiate colors, estimate speeds, and detect environmental cues such as whistles and air horns. Knowledge of FRA, APTA, FTA, and AREMA standards for rail track inspection and maintenance. Demonstrated experience operating rail and crane equipment. Knowledge of track and structure maintenance work for rail systems. Knowledge of industrial safety standards and procedures, including use of small cranes and lifting equipment. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and drawings. Proficiency in verbal and written communication. Basic computer software proficiency. Problem‑solving and analytical skills. Mechanical skills associated with maintaining fixed track and structures. Knowledge of codes and compliance requirements for track and associated structures. Ability to work safely in all weather and environmental conditions, including elevated and underground structures. Knowledge of concrete work, including finishing. Capacity to deal proactively and sensitively with customers and coworkers, demonstrating commitment to inclusion, fairness, and equity. Knowledge of traffic‑safety techniques for establishing safe work zones on tracks and public roadways. Desired Qualifications Experience with Maintenance Management Information Systems (MMIS), Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAMS), or equivalent work‑order tracking systems. Knowledge of associated hardware, manuals, procedures, and parts catalogs. Ability to operate radio and telephone communication systems in compliance with FTA regulations. Railroad welding experience with stick (SMAW), GMAW, or exothermic welding on manganese steel, and certification (or ability to obtain certification). Necessary Special Requirements Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; out‑of‑state license holders must obtain a Washington state license within 30 days of hire. Washington State Class “A” or “B” commercial driver’s license with air‑brake endorsement, or a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) with same endorsement, completing a full CDL within six months of hire. Ability to obtain Hi‑Rail, forklift, aerial lift, first‑aid/CPR and other certifications; training will be provided. Ongoing educational and training requirements and maintenance of required certifications. Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to perform heavy manual labor, stand, walk long distances and lift materials, tools and objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work Schedule Full‑time, 40 hours per week. Employees must be able to work any of the three shifts (day, swing or graveyard) and may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Safety Sensitive Applicants must undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent periodic testing in compliance with federal guidelines. Safety‑sensitive positions are defined by the agency.
