Job Overview
Basic Summary:
A Medical Technologist I is responsible for performing specimen analyses and administrative duties, required by protocols, Business Operating Procedures (BOPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), on biological specimens from all species to produce sound, accurate, and reliable data. The individual in this role must use good communication and interpersonal skills in a collaborative team environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensure good welfare and humane care for all animals worked with through gentle, positive
human-animal interactions.
Train on all Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
Train in on-boarding tasks which may include reading protocols, SOPs, and BOPs.
Performs basic medical technology techniques on primary benches (urinalysis, coagulation,
hematology, and chemistry).
Processes specimens: checking for clots, making blood smears and pipetting of serum/plasma.
Trains and gains proficiency in Medical Technologist I core skills and values.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.
The pay for this position is $28.00 - 32.00/hr. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
Job Description
Qualifications:
Education: Associate degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent in medical laboratory technology (MLT) or related field desired. Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in medical technology (MT) preferred.
Experience: 0-1 year of experience in a clinical pathology laboratory.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
Certification/Licensure: MLT, MT, or MLS with certification or certification eligible (ASCP or HEW) preferred.
Demonstrated ability to learn and perform clinical laboratory procedures, both manually and using instrumentation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills inside and outside the organization.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve goals.
Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office), commensurate with essential functions, including the ability to learn a validated system.
Ability to ensure that a safe working environment is maintained by observing all safety procedures and working methods by making proper use of protective clothing and equipment, and by reading, understanding, and following all safety documents issued or notified of.
Ability to ensure the integrity of the studies and fulfill the regulatory agencies requirements by performing the activities according to the Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Business Operating Procedures (BOP) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) rules.
GLP environment requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and accurate record keeping competencies.
Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
Ability to work under specific time constraints.
Must be authorized to work in the United States without a sponsor visa, now or in the future.
Physical Demands:
Employees must be able to lift, move, manipulate, and/or hold heavy objects up to and including 30 pounds; this includes work materials, equipment, and/or animals.
Must be able to perform laboratory procedures, which require talking, hearing, walking, standing or sitting for long periods of time (75% of the workday), entering data into a computer, using appropriate instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing safety equipment (PPE) according to OSHA regulations and company standards.
Utilize meticulous fine-motor skills.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
General research laboratory working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly wears protective clothing (company supplied scrubs, lab coats, safety glasses, gloves, shoes and or shoe covers), works with sharp objects (e.g., needles).
Occasionally works with chemicals or preclinical research compounds with known or unknown levels of toxicity.
Comments:
- This position requires overtime, weekend, holiday, and/or after hours shift coverage, as needed.
