Tolling Maintenance Technician (Technician IV) - Denver

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) invites qualified Colorado state residents to apply for the Tolling Maintenance Technician (Technician IV) position, working within the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO). The anticipated start date is July 13, 2026. The CTIO operates the Express Lanes network across 176 lane miles and is responsible for continuous maintenance and performance oversight. This role supports the Tolling Maintenance Supervisor in ensuring toll road equipment operates safely and efficiently. Responsibilities Assist the Tolling Maintenance Supervisor with toll road maintenance, repair, escalations, and reporting, working with vendors responsible for Express Lanes equipment. Monitor ETC riteOSS™ and Tolling Access Portal (TAP) systems to detect roadside equipment or device damage. Perform day‑to‑day monitoring of tolling systems, accompany contractor maintenance teams to investigate damage, determine repairs, and ensure contractor performance according to specifications and SOPs. Ensure contractor maintenance and repairs occur within prescribed timeframes outlined in contracts. Coordinate vendor and contractor installation of new equipment and oversee proper installation. Work with CDOT Maintenance and vendors to facilitate road closures when necessary for installations. Coordinate with supervisor to ensure emergency repair contracts are completed. Monitor the maintenance ticketing process and provide guidance to ensure tickets are updated and closed promptly. Collaborate with CDOT Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services (ITS) during fiber and network outages, and with CDOT Roadway Technical Services (RTS) during Toll Rate Dynamic Pricing Sign outages. Provide training to contractors if needed. Inventory and Spare Parts Tracking Perform physical inventory audits of spare parts. Follow Return Material Authorization (RMA) factory return programs. Communicate with vendors to manage parts inventory based on demand. Track transponder inventory. Reports and Planning Generate reports on overall maintenance performance. Create reports for equipment changes or upgrades. Analyze trends and patterns to assess equipment performance, toll point locations, uptime, and SLA metrics. Monitor contractor Key Process Indicators (KPIs) and report trends to the Maintenance Supervisor. System Testing and Coordination of Toll Project Activities Document device or software failures and ensure all punch list items are resolved before testing. Test new toll rates and algorithms to validate expected changes. Document maintenance issues for corrective action. Attend Go‑Live meetings. Provide input into guidance documents for best maintenance practices. Other duties as assigned. Work Environment Typical schedule: 8:00–5:00, Monday–Friday. Hybrid schedule with in‑office and remote work. On‑call for equipment failure response at any time. Work may require use of multiple computer screens. Driving required in CDOT vehicles to Express Lanes and various locations. Travel to conferences, meetings, and vendor locations may be required. Minimum Qualifications At least four (4) years of experience installing or repairing electronic, traffic, tolling, or IT/computer equipment such as VMS boards, antennas, lane controllers, loops, Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS), Toll Rate Dynamic Pricing Signs, and surveillance cameras. Education from an accredited college or university in transportation, IT, electrical, systems, or mechanical engineering, combined with at least four (4) years of relevant experience, is acceptable. Preferred Qualifications Proven success with duties outlined above. Highest work/personal ethics and integrity. State service experience related to the duties. Experience with traffic operations platforms (TAP, ETC’s riteSuite, CCTV). Leadership and training skills with contractors or employees. Strong analytical, investigative, and problem‑solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication. Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects, and work under pressure. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and eagerness to learn new software.
