Certified/Medical Assistant - Substance Abuse Program

Overview The Certified Medical Assistant for the Substance Abuse Program will work under general supervision and assist clinicians and staff in providing ambulatory health care to patients. The position involves direct patient contact and includes both clinical and clerical duties such as stocking exam rooms, maintaining supplies, and documenting patient information. All tasks are performed in accordance with prescribed methods, techniques, and procedures. Hours Scheduled Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑4:00 pm). Responsibilities Check patients’ medical records for pertinent data. Greet and escort patients to exam rooms; prepare for the provider by obtaining initial information and vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, height, weight, BMI, and head circumference as specified by the program). Document chief complaints and notify the nurse/provider of unusual symptoms. Assist in telephone follow‑up with patients as directed by the program. Under the direction of the provider and/or nurse, assist with basic patient health education. Inspect exam rooms for cleanliness and equipment condition. Maintain ordered supplies and keep areas stocked; check for outdated medical supplies. Perform tasks including filing, chart documentation, and telephone follow‑up as assigned. Perform peak flow, spirometry, EKG, application of Non‑Stress Test (NST) belts, point‑of‑care testing, and phlebotomy services as directed. Develop and maintain awareness of the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) to promote positive health outcomes. Demonstrate adherence to National Patient Safety Goals and other accrediting and regulatory standards (e.g., The Joint Commission, HRSA). Report all unusual occurrences that may involve patient or coworker safety to the supervisor and/or Safety Officer. Assist in bilingual translation as appropriate. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. One year of experience preferred. Medical assistant certification or registration required: The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) - CMA, The Association of Medical Technologists (AMT) - RMA, The National Healthcare Association (NHA) - CCMA, National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)–NCMA, American Allied Health (AAH) – RMA. Additional Requirements If not certified upon hire, the medical assistant must receive certification or registration within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to provide proof results in termination. Successfully complete LCHD/CHC competencies within 6 months of hire. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary. Ability to travel to multiple LCHD/CHC locations regularly. Ability to maintain and keep records. Basic reading, writing, and comprehension of simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Some knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Knowledge of medical terminology. Experience with computers and electronic health records preferable. Ability to operate various office and medical equipment. Candidates who completed a 160‑hour externship with LCHD/CHC have the one‑year experience requirement waived.
