Medical Laboratory Scientist-Part Time Days

Job Description This is a part time position 20 hours per week located at Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital. The schedule is 6:30a to 3pm with every third weekend rotation. Medical Laboratory Scientist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. A Medical Laboratory Scientist performs test procedures in a clinical laboratory and conveys the results to the physician or designee in an accurate and timely manner for the purpose of patient diagnosis and treatment. Responsibilities Pre-analytic workflow: Ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test, and are correctly processed/transported. Verify orders and non-patient information as per protocol, handle unresolved orders, and troubleshoot when needed. Specimen collection, receipt and processing: Verify specimen labeling, evaluate for appropriateness, document unacceptable specimens, prioritize processing, aliquot specimens, and perform all analytical testing per SOP. Test system integrity: Perform preventive maintenance, verify reagents and supplies, maintain necessary inventory, record quality control, evaluate QC results, and take necessary corrective actions. Specimen preparation: Perform required pre-test preparation per protocols and ship specimens to approved testing locations per SOP. Testing: Prioritize testing, meet turnaround times, follow age‑specific protocols, respond to workflow changes, and monitor daily workflow. Technical review & interpretation: Review results for completeness and consistency, provide accurate interpretations, perform visual identification, and complete reflex testing or other follow-up actions as needed. Notification protocols: Follow established protocols for critical values, phone/fax/email results requests, and abnormalities. Troubleshooting and post-analytical responsibilities: Recognize performance problems, document pending logs, perform post-analytical workflow, verify and report results, generate written reports, amend erroneous reports, respond to inquiries, and store documents. Charge capture and billing: Perform billing and credit entries, recognize billing problems, and escalating accordingly. Universal responsibilities: Follow SOPs, operate instruments and computers per protocol, perform quality system responsibilities, meet proficiency standards, train new employees and students, review new SOPs, participate in new test development, attend personal development sessions, perform other duties as assigned. Safety, service excellence and confidentiality: Follow safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, answer telephone with NM etiquette, maintain patient confidentiality (PHI), and assist patients, visitors and contacts as needed. Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification examination. License/Certification and Regulatory Agency: General MLS or MT (ASCP) certification or eligible; categorical BB, C, H or M (ASCP) certification or eligible. If hired after 1/19/2025 must be ASCP certified (or equivalent) within one year of employment.
