Emergency Dept Technician

Summary The ED Tech functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice with a variety of patients. The tech works as part of a team with a goal of offering patient‑centered, timely care in a safe, friendly environment. The tech provides individualized compassionate care to emergency department patients, observation patients, and outpatients based on physician and RN directions. This position involves performing duties within scope including specimen collection, vital signs, stocking supplies, cleaning, patient transportation, clerical duties, lab collection, respiratory treatments, and additional roles as assigned. The tech assists nurses, physicians, and team members to deliver relationship‑based patient care and works with sophisticated equipment in a friendly but often stressful environment. Responsibilities 40% – Maintain a friendly, customer‑oriented attitude and treat all patients, families, staff, and visitors with kindness, compassion, respect, and relationship‑based care. 30% – Follow RN direction to provide services specified by the physician’s care plan and standard practice within the tech’s scope of practice, including direct care, minor treatments, answering call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, and other duties. 20% – Report treatment effectiveness to the RN and collaborate on updating or revising care plans with the team. 10% – Stay knowledgeable and compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and the ED’s procedures, maintaining professional standards. Other Duties and Responsibilities Safety Demonstrate awareness of specific safety concerns and infection‑prevention practices. Comply with safety guidelines, maintain equipment, and report unsafe conditions promptly. Participate in safety drills and use lift equipment routinely. Education Attend education days and pursue self‑education opportunities. Patient Care Collect vital signs and weight. Move, lift, and transport patients. Perform IV access and other clinical tasks per policy. Maintain clean exam rooms, manage supplies, and support patient flow. Operate cardiac monitors and assist with emergency equipment under supervision. Complete necessary documentation and follow sterile technique during procedures. Quality Support ED mission, goals, policies, and standards. Assist RN in ensuring patient outcomes and safety. Communicate problems and implement solutions. Maintain areas per Joint Commission standards and participate in quality improvement. Secretary Perform clerical duties, answer telephone, enter orders, assist with procedures, and demonstrate sterile technique. Emergency Care/Safety Maintain provider certification as required. Follow procedures in all emergency situations. Ensure a safe environment, observe fall precautions, and handle situational hazards. Ordering and Stocking Assist with ordering supplies as needed, including weekly purchases, special invoices, pharmacy orders, and exam‑room stocking. Certifications and Licensures BLS: Basic Life Support – Equivalent Experience: within 1 month of hire or transfer (Source: AHA, Essential: true) PCT: MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN – Must hold an internal MMH PCT/CNA/EMT/LPN certification, current state registry or equivalent; nursing students with first semester completed are acceptable. Ability to treat patients across all ages, including those over 100 years. Physical, Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful and potentially traumatic situations. Ability to wear PPE, including latex, when required. Mobility throughout the facility, lifting up to 100 lbs. (rare) and handling frequent loads over 50 lbs. Good vision, hearing, manual dexterity; resistant to repetitive motions. Mandatory blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing per policy. Require frequent standing, walking, and possible stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Other Comments Position is on‑call as scheduled.
